Who was the angel who stirred the water in the pool of Bethesda? — John 5

Did an angel from God really come down and stir the water at Bethesda? Textual criticism shows that this verse is absent from the earliest manuscripts. It was probably added later as an explanation. The center of the story is not the angel and the water, but Jesus, who heals by His word.
