What does the angel with feet on the sea and on the land mean in Revelation 10:2?

Prophecy 1 min read updated 10 May 2026

The tenth chapter of Revelation is a transition between the sixth and seventh trumpets. A mighty angel descends with a cloud, a rainbow over his head, feet like pillars of fire—and places his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land. What does this mean?

The symbolism of the position of the feet

“And he set his right foot on the sea, and his left foot on the land.” Rev. 10:2

In ancient symbolism, to place one’s foot on something meant to take authority over it. The angel standing on both sea and land symbolizes God’s universal reach: there is no corner of earth or sea that lies outside His authority and His message.

Adventist interpretation

Adventists have traditionally identified this angel with the “mighty angel” of Rev. 18:1—and connect the scene with the unfolding of the “everlasting gospel” (Rev. 14:6). The little book in the angel’s hand is the Book of Daniel, which after 1844 was opened in a new way.

Rev. 10:7 speaks of the “finishing of the mystery of God”—at the time when the seventh angel begins to sound. The moment of universal scope = the moment of the irreversible completion of the plan of salvation.

Practical meaning

  • No nation and no person is outside the reach of God’s message.
  • The “sweet and bitter” book (Rev. 10:9–10)—the gospel always begins as joy and ends with the need to bear the burden of testimony.
  • The worldwide scope of the Great Commission is not a dream, but a prophetic reality.

The angel with feet on sea and land reminds us: God is greater than any boundary—geographical, cultural, or political. His Word will find a way.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
