Why are Jesus and God called “the First and the Last,” “the Alpha and the Omega” in the Bible?

Among all the names and titles of God in Scripture, "Alpha and Omega" is one of the grandest: it reveals not a simple attribute, but the very manner of God's being in relation to time and creation.

The original source: Isaiah

"I am the First and I am the Last, and besides Me there is no God." Isaiah 44:6

In the Old Testament, the Lord declares Himself to be "the First and the Last" as a statement of exclusivity: He is not one of the gods; He is absolute reality, with whom everything begins and ends. This is not a metaphor — it is an ontological statement.

The revelation in Revelation

"I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End," says the Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." Revelation 1:8

Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, Omega the last. Together they mean: God encompasses the entire range of reality. He did not simply "exist in the beginning" and "will be at the end" — He is the foundation of every moment in between.

In Revelation 22:13, Jesus applies the same title to Himself: "I am Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." This is direct testimony to His divinity — He shares the nature and eternity of the Father.

Adventist understanding

Seventh-day Adventists see in these titles confirmation both of Christ's eternity and of the trustworthiness of His word. If He is "the First and the Last," then His promises do not expire. "I will come again" (John 14:3) is not an empty hope, but the word of the One who is eternal.

Practical meaning

  • God is "Alpha" — He was already there where you are beginning.
  • God is "Omega" — He is already there where you fear the ending.
  • Between Alpha and Omega, not a single moment of your life is outside His attention.

"Alpha and Omega" is not just a beautiful title. It is the acknowledgment that God is not an external observer of our story, but its Author, the One who has already read the last page and knows: it is good.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
