The Bible holds a central place in spiritual life not because that is the church custom, but because it is the living Word of God, able to change a person from within. To a young person it may seem like an ancient book — but Scripture itself declares its nature, and millions of people confirm it by their own experience. Not religious tradition, but an encounter with the living God — that is what happens when the Bible is read with an open heart.
The Word that is not passive
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword: it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Heb. 4:12
“Living and active” — two Greek words that mean: it does not lie there dead; it is actively at work. When a person reads the Bible with an open heart, the Holy Spirit uses the Word as an instrument — revealing hidden motives, correcting thinking, healing emotional wounds, and strengthening faith.
A weapon in spiritual warfare
The apostle Paul calls the Word of God part of the spiritual armor:
“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Eph 6:17
Jesus in the wilderness, when the devil tempted Him, answered each time: “It is written…” — and quoted Scripture. The Word of God is a practical weapon, which repels spiritual attacks. Whoever does not know Scripture is defenseless in the battle for the mind and heart.
The path to personally knowing God
“Search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39
Jesus said: the Scriptures testify of Me. The Bible is not an end in itself. It leads to a living relationship with Christ. Whoever reads it regularly and thoughtfully gradually comes to know God not as an abstraction, but as a Person who can be trusted.
Practical meaning
Spiritual life without regular Scripture reading is like a body without food. It may still seem to move, but it grows weaker and weaker. For the Word to truly shape life:
- Read daily — at least one chapter with reflection.
- Pray before reading — ask the Spirit to open the meaning.
- Look for specific application — how does this touch my life today?
The Bible is important not because it is a religious duty. It is important because through it the living God speaks — and everyone who listens becomes a different person.
