The catalyst of end-time events is not a single event, but a combination of processes that make the world ready for decisions that contradict God’s will. In the light of Scripture, the answer to the question “what accelerates the approach of the final crisis” lies not only in political or economic upheavals. The Bible shows that the decisive factor is connected with the condition of the human heart, the moral atmosphere of society, and the spiritual readiness—or unreadiness—to distinguish truth from deception.
The biblical meaning of “catalyst”
In the prophetic context, a catalyst is that which rapidly changes the course of history and pushes people toward a final choice. Jesus described the atmosphere of the last days not only as a time of wars and upheavals, but also as a time of spiritual cooling:
“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” Matt. 24:12
External crises only reveal a deeper inner problem: a heart disconnected from God becomes vulnerable to fear, deception, and pressure.
Crisis, fear, and exchanging freedom for security
The Bible repeatedly shows that in times of danger people tend to seek quick solutions—even if they lead to false worship or the loss of freedom of conscience:
“For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them.” 1 Thess. 5:3
In the book of Revelation, the final crisis will include both religious deception and a system of coercion:
“And he causes all, both small and great… to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads.” Rev. 13:16
Before such coercion, society must be psychologically prepared to accept restrictions on freedom in the name of order, unity, or the common good. It is crises—economic, moral, natural, political—that become the catalyst for such thinking. Ellen White repeatedly warned that at the end of history religion and state power will unite, and the issue of conscience will become central.
Moral decline as soil for deception
When sin is no longer perceived as sin, truth becomes inconvenient, and God’s Law becomes undesirable. Paul wrote:
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters…” 2 Tim. 3:1–2
Such a condition is not a minor matter—it is a spiritual climate, in which people more easily accept a counterfeit instead of the truth. The final crisis is connected with worship and obedience. At the center will be the question: to whom does our loyalty belong—the Creator or a human system?
“Fear God and give glory to Him… and worship Him who made heaven and earth.” Rev. 14:7
The catalyst of the last events is not only the increase of evil, but also the general loss of the ability to value God’s truth.
The spiritual vigilance of God’s people
If the world is preparing for crisis through fear and deception, God’s people must prepare through sobriety, prayer, and faithfulness to Scripture:
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Pet. 5:8
The main task is not to guess sensational developments, but to form a character rooted in Christ. Those who will stand are not those who simply know the outline of events, but those who live with Jesus every day. Ellen White wrote that only those who have fortified their minds with biblical truth will stand in the final conflict.
Why this matters already now
End-time events do not begin in a single day. They are prepared gradually—through the thinking, values, and spiritual condition of humanity. Therefore, the catalyst is not only “what will happen,” but “why society will be ready to accept it.”
“And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draws near.” Luke 21:28
