The expression “like the Son of Man” in Rev. 1:13 is not uncertainty, but characteristic biblical language of prophetic vision. John sees the glorified Christ, but describes Him cautiously—using the traditional prophetic style of comparison. This expression also points back to Daniel’s profound messianic prophecy.
The language of prophetic visions
When the prophets described heavenly scenes, they often used the words “likeness,” “as if,” “like”. The reason is simple: human language is limited, and visions surpass ordinary experience.
For example, Ezekiel describes God’s throne this way:
“And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone; and on the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man high above it.” Ezek. 1:26

The Glorified Christ
When John lived with Jesus on earth, he saw Him as Teacher, Friend, and Savior. But in Revelation Christ is revealed in a completely different role — as the heavenly King and High Priest.
The description in the first chapter is striking in its majesty: eyes like a flame of fire, a voice like the sound of many waters, a face shining like the sun. He is clothed in a long garment and girded with a golden sash — attire that recalls the ministry of the high priest.
This shows an important truth: after His resurrection and ascension, Jesus continues to minister to His people. He is our Heavenly High Priest.
John’s reaction was very strong:
“And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead.” Rev. 1:17
Christ Among the Lampstands
In the same verse it says that Christ is “in the midst of the seven lampstands”. Later it is explained: these lampstands symbolize the churches.
This is an important detail. Christ is not somewhere far away in heaven — He is among His people. He sees the condition of the church, knows its difficulties, warns, encourages, and corrects. In the following chapters of Revelation, Jesus addresses the seven churches with messages.
