What is the purpose of Sabbath School lessons, and how should they be studied properly?

Sabbath School has existed for more than 150 years — and during that time it has formed spiritual leaders, raised generations of the faithful, and preserved congregations in the hardest times. But its value is not in tradition. It is in what Scripture is and what happens when people open it together.

The goal: not merely to know, but to grow

“All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Tim 3:16–17

Paul emphasizes: the purpose of studying Scripture is not only information, but transformation. “So that the man of God may be complete” — this is not knowledge about God; it is character that reflects God.

The Sabbath School lesson is designed to immerse the church each week in a particular text or topic — systematically, from different angles, in community. It does not replace personal reading, but it gives what personal reading cannot: a diversity of experience and questions.

How to study the lesson correctly

  • Read throughout the week, not only on Sabbath. The lesson is divided into days — and this is not accidental. Regular immersion in the text gives a depth that one-time reading does not.
  • Ask questions, not just read answers. A good Sabbath School class discussion is where people bring their questions, not just the right answers.
  • Look for personal application. Before each section, it is helpful to ask: “What does this truth mean for my specific day this week?”

Sabbath School as a community, not just a class

The Word of God is opened in community. The one who comes with pain hears the text differently. The one who is experiencing joy sees another dimension. The diversity of the participants’ experiences is part of God’s design for shared study.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another.” Col. 3:16

Sabbath School is not a lecture to sit through. It is a space where the Word of God can change you—through the text, through a brother, through a question you did not dare to ask alone.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
