What was inside the ark of the covenant according to the Bible?

The ark of the covenant was the holiest object in the earthly sanctuary—the place where God’s presence was symbolically manifested among the people. Inside it were kept three items, and each of them told its part of the great story: about the Law, about God’s providence, and about the legitimate priesthood.

The Tablets of the Ten Commandments

The main contents of the ark were the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments—written by the “finger of God” on Mount Sinai:

“And you shall put into the ark the Testimony which I will give you.” Exod. 25:16

Later, 1 Kings 8:9 clarifies that when the ark was brought into Solomon’s temple, “there was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets.” They remained its very core.

A notable detail: the cover of the ark—the mercy seat—was placed directly above the Law. This is profound spiritual symbolism: God’s mercy does not abolish the Law, but works in harmony with it. Where the Law is, there grace is also.

The Golden Jar of Manna

The second item was a golden jar with manna, the wondrous food with which God fed Israel for 40 years in the wilderness:

“And Moses said, ‘Take a pot and put an omer of manna in it, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations.’” Exod. 16:33

Manna was a reminder: God cares for the daily needs of His people. Jesus referred to this image, calling Himself “the bread which came down from heaven” (John 6:51). The manna pointed forward—to the One who is the true spiritual nourishment.

Aaron’s Rod That Budded

The third item was Aaron’s rod, which budded and bore fruit, confirming God’s choice of Aaron as high priest (Num. 17).

“...and the rod of Aaron, of the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth buds, had produced blossoms and yielded ripe almonds.” Num. 17:8

The miracle of dead wood bearing fruit is an image of resurrection and of God-confirmed authority. It points to Christ—the High Priest appointed by God “not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life” (Heb. 7:16).

Three items—three dimensions

All three items in the ark together tell us about the relationship between God and humanity:

  • The Law — God is holy and just.
  • Manna — God is good and caring.
  • The Rod — God is faithful and appoints a Mediator.

Above all this is the mercy seat, where the blood of the sacrifice was applied to the cover on the Day of Atonement. There the sin of man and the forgiveness of God met.

The ark of the covenant is not merely a golden chest with sacred relics. It is a visual lesson about who God is and how He builds a relationship with His people.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
