Why does the way of the cross bring inner peace and spiritual strength?

Why does the way of the cross bring inner peace and spiritual strength?

Salvation 2 min read updated 9 May 2026

For most people, the cross is associated first of all with pain and loss. But Jesus speaks of it as a way—and as a way that leads not to defeat, but to true life.

"If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me." Luke 9:23

What does it mean to “deny yourself”

Self-denial is not the rejection of personality or joy. It is the refusal of putting yourself at the center: your plans, your offenses, your need to control. It is the acknowledgment: “God knows better than I do, and I trust Him even when I do not understand.”

It is precisely in this surrender that freedom is born. A person who stops trying to control everything also stops carrying the burden of everything.

Where peace comes from—even in suffering

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:7

Paul wrote these words from prison. Not “if all is well.” “The peace of God” is not the absence of difficulties, but the presence of God in difficulties. Whoever walks the way of the cross discovers that Christ walks beside them. And this very presence is the source of peace.

Where spiritual strength comes from

A person who has given up relying on their own strength as the final resource discovers another resource:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

This is not enthusiasm or self-suggestion. It is the experience of a person who has come to the end of their own possibilities—and discovered the One who stands there.

Practical meaning

  • Peace and strength on the way of the cross are not a reward for endurance. They are the presence of Christ in what you carry.
  • When it becomes hard—do not ask “why,” but ask “where are You here, Lord?” This prayer opens the eyes to His presence.
  • The cross that is taken up daily is not a catastrophe. It is a way of living in dependence on God, rather than on your own resources.

The way of the cross is paradoxical: where you deny yourself, you find yourself. Where you acknowledge your weakness, strength is revealed. This is not human wisdom. This is the gospel.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
