how to add a website or chat to the home screen of a phone or computer

To access the service right from the desktop, you usually do not need to “save a file,” but rather add a shortcut or install the web app. The method depends on whether you are using a phone, tablet, or computer, as well as on the browser — Chrome, Edge, Safari, or another one.

When someone asks how to “save to the desktop,” they usually mean quick access to a website or online service. This is convenient: an icon appears on the screen, and you can open the page with one tap or click. In most cases, there are two options: create a regular shortcut or install the site as an app. The second option usually looks cleaner and opens in a separate window.

How to add it to your phone’s home screen

On a smartphone, the easiest way is to add the page to the home screen. After that, the icon will look almost like a regular app.

For Android:
1. Open the desired website in the Chrome browser.
2. Tap the browser menu — usually the three dots in the upper-right corner.
3. Select “Add to Home screen” or “Install app.”
4. Confirm the action.
5. The icon will appear on your phone’s screen.

For iPhone or iPad:
1. Open the page in Safari.
2. Tap the “Share” button.
3. Scroll through the list and select “Add to Home Screen.”
4. Change the shortcut name if needed.
5. Tap “Add.”

If the option does not appear, make sure the page is opened in Safari itself, not in the built-in browser of another app.

How to create a desktop shortcut in Windows

On a Windows computer, there are several simple ways. The most common is through Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

Method by installing the app:
1. Open the website you want to use.
2. Look on the right side of the address bar — sometimes there is an install icon there.
3. If there is no icon, open the browser menu.
4. Select “Install app,” “Apps,” “Install this site as an app,” or a similar option.
5. After installation, the shortcut will appear in the Start menu, and often on the desktop as well.

Method by creating a shortcut:
1. Open the site in the browser.
2. Resize the window so that the desktop is visible.
3. Drag the icon to the left of the site address directly onto the desktop.
4. Windows will create a shortcut to that page.

Another option in Chrome:
1. Open the browser menu.
2. Select “More tools.”
3. Click “Create shortcut.”
4. Check “Open as window” if you want the page to work separately from the browser.

How to add a shortcut on Mac

On a Mac, you can also create quick access to the website you need. If you use Safari, Chrome, or Edge, the steps may differ slightly, but the logic is the same.

In Safari on Mac:
1. Open the desired page.
2. Highlight the website address in the address bar.
3. Drag the address to the desktop.
4. A shortcut file will be created that opens this page.

In Chrome or Edge:
1. Open the site.
2. In the menu, find the option to create a shortcut or install the site as an app.
3. Confirm the creation.
4. If needed, pin the icon to the Dock for even faster access.

If you specifically want a separate “app,” it is better to choose installing the site as an app rather than a simple shortcut.

Which is better: a shortcut or an installed web app

Both options work, but there is a difference between them.

Shortcut:
• simply opens the site in the browser;
• is created quickly;
• is suitable almost always.

Web app:
• may open in a separate window;
• sometimes has a cleaner interface;
• is more convenient for services you use every day.

If you often visit the same website, it is better to try installing it as an app. If you only need quick access, a simple shortcut is enough.

What to do if nothing works

Sometimes the needed button does not appear. The reasons may vary: a different browser, an older version of the program, system limitations, or the page does not support installation as an app.

Try the following:
• open the site in another browser, for example Chrome, Edge, or Safari;
• update the browser to the latest version;
• check whether you opened the page directly and not inside a messenger app;
• use the method of dragging the address to the desktop;
• if it is a phone, look specifically for the option “Add to Home Screen.”

It is also worth considering that on some websites installation is available only when the resource supports the web app format. If not, a regular shortcut still solves the problem of quick access.

In summary, to “save to the desktop,” you need either to create a shortcut or install the site as an app, depending on the device. On Android this is done through the Chrome menu, on iPhone through Safari and the “Add to Home Screen” button, on Windows through Chrome, Edge, or simply dragging the address, and on Mac through creating a shortcut or installing a web app.

In practice, the best thing to do is this: open the site on your device, find the option in the browser called “Add to Home Screen,” “Create shortcut,” or “Install app,” and check which option is more convenient for your daily use.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
