The words “The name of the Lord is a strong tower” are found in Proverbs 18:10. This short but very profound statement reveals who God is for His people: protection, refuge, and the source of complete safety. For a believer, this verse is not just a beautiful image, but a practical invitation to trust the Lord in every danger, anxiety, or inner struggle.
Direct text of Proverbs
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Prov. 18:10
Solomon uses the image of a fortified tower — a structure that in the ancient Near East provided shelter from enemies and storms. God’s name is not merely a sound — it represents His character, power, and presence. To take refuge in the Lord’s name means to take refuge in the Lord Himself.
What “Name” means in the biblical sense
In the Bible, a name is not just a label. It means the whole person, reputation, authority, and character. Therefore, “the name of God” includes His:
- Power — He is able to protect.
- Faithfulness — He does not change and does not betray.
- Presence — wherever you may flee, He is already there.
- Love — He is not indifferent; He cares.
So when the psalmist says, “hide me in the shadow of Your wings,” or when Isaiah promises: “The Lord will be your everlasting light” — it is the same principle as in Proverbs 18:10. God Himself is our tower.
To whom this promise is given
The text says: “the righteous run to it and are safe”. Here, “the righteous” is not a moral ideal, but one who turns to God in faith. This is not a person without mistakes, but a person who, in the hardest moment, runs not to personal strength, not to human help, not to substances or развлечения — but to the Lord.
The psalmist illustrates this with personal experience:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed.” Ps. 45:2–3
How to “run into the tower of the Lord’s name”
This is not a magic formula — these are concrete spiritual actions:
- Prayer that names anxiety specifically. Not “Lord, I feel bad,” but “Lord, I am afraid of this illness / this conversation / this future.” Specificity is the beginning of trust.
- Appeal to God’s names in Scripture. The Lord reveals Himself as Jehovah-Shalom (The Lord is my peace), Jehovah-Ra'ah (The Lord is my Shepherd), Jehovah-Jireh (The Lord will provide). Each name is a door into a specific aspect of His character.
- A quiet remembrance of His works. What He has already done is the foundation of what He will do still.
What this means for you today
Proverbs 18:10 is not a theoretical truth, but a practical door. If today you are experiencing fear, anxiety, temptation, or exhaustion — God has a tower ready for you. You do not need to achieve anything to enter. You only need to run.
“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest!” Matthew 11:28
This is the same invitation — in the Old Testament called a “tower,” in the New Testament “rest.” One Lord, one Name, one place of safety.
