Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet.” Jesus says to the disciples in Matthew 5:14, “You are the light of the world.” Is there not a contradiction here? In fact, no. These two images describe different roles in one stream of God’s light: Christ is the Source, Scripture is the guide to Him, and the faithful are bearers of reflected light in a dark world.
The Word of God: a lamp for a specific step
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Ps. 119:105
In ancient times, a traveler carried in his hand a small clay lamp—it illuminated only a few steps ahead, not the whole horizon. The psalmist uses precisely this image: God’s Word gives as much light as is needed for the next step. Not the whole plan for the year—but clarity for today.
Scripture gives direction in moral decisions, corrects false thinking, and reveals the character of God. Through it, the Lord speaks personally—to every heart.
Christ is the true Source
But the Word of God is not the source itself—it points to Him:
“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12
Christ said this—“I.” Not “My teaching,” not “Scripture”—but He Himself. Scripture leads to Him. The menorah in the sanctuary burned with oil—Christ is that oil, without which the flame goes out.
The faithful are bearers, not the source
“You are the light of the world… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father.” Matthew 5:14–16
When Jesus says “you are the light,” He does not make people an alternative source. The moon is not a star, but it reflects sunlight in the night. So it is with the faithful: they carry into the world what they have received from Christ through His Word and Spirit.
The goal is “that they may see your good works and glorify your Father.” Not you— the Father. This is the proper position of a witness: to bear the light in such a way that people see the One who stands behind it.
Practical meaning
There is no contradiction between “the Word is light” and “you are light.” There is one single stream:
- Christ is the Source.
- Scripture is a guide to Him and His voice in the heart.
- The faithful are bearers of reflected light in daily life.
A lampstand does not burn without fire. Fire is not passed on without a lampstand. Both are needed. But to burn means to be connected with the Source every day.
