Jesus’ first miracle—turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana—raises a natural question: did He make an alcoholic beverage? The answer depends on understanding biblical language and, above all, understanding the character of Christ. The word “wine” in the Bible does not always mean a fermented drink —and the context is very helpful in determining what is meant.
The word “wine” in the Bible: two meanings
Neither the ancient Hebrew nor the Greek word for “wine” refers exclusively to alcohol. Isaiah uses the word “wine” in reference to juice still in the grapes:
“As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one says, ‘Do not destroy it, for a blessing is in it.’” Isa. 65:8
That is, “wine” is not necessarily alcohol. At the same time, Scripture clearly warns against intoxicating wine:
“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” Prov. 20:1
The character of Christ as the key to understanding
The main argument is not linguistic, but theological. Jesus came to deliver people from the power of sin:
“For He will save His people from their sins.” Matt. 1:21
Could He—the same Jesus—by His first miracle provide wedding guests with a large quantity of alcohol when they had already drunk well? That would contradict everything He taught and everything He was. The character of Christ is internally consistent.
Moreover, if He had served alcohol, the master of the feast would not have been able to soberly evaluate the quality of the drink and praise the “best wine kept until now.” This is another hint: the issue was quality, not strength.
What Ellen White says
Ellen White writes plainly in The Ministry of Healing: “The wine which Christ provided for the feast, and that which He gave to the disciples as a symbol of His own blood, was the pure juice of the grape” (p. 333). She emphasizes that Christ always acted in ways that bless and protect people—not to give them a means for sin and self-destruction.
Practical meaning
The miracle at Cana is not an argument in favor of alcohol. On the contrary, it shows Christ as the One who:
- Cares about people’s joy at a celebration.
- Acts in harmony with His character and teaching.
- Does not indulge weakness, but blesses within the order of God.
“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” 1 Cor 3:16
Jesus’ first miracle is about generosity and care, not about alcohol. Understanding Christ’s character is the key to rightly reading every text that raises questions about His actions.
