Many young people have a Bible, but do not know how to read it—where to begin, how much to read, what to do if something is unclear. God gave His Word not for theologians, but for every person. And He Himself gave the Teacher who explains: The Holy Spirit, who lives in every believer.
The goal is not knowledge, but an encounter
“Search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39
Jesus did not say, "Search the Scriptures so that you may know the commandments"—He said, "they testify of MeMe." The goal of reading the Bible is to know Christ. This changes the approach: not "I need to read the required amount," but "I want to learn more about the One who loves me."
Where to begin
For someone who is just starting:
- The Gospel of John —the best place to start. Clear, specific, about Christ.
- Psalms —the prayers of people who experienced joy, fear, despair, and found God.
- The letters of the apostle Paul —the practice of Christian life, an explanation of the gospel.
You do not need to read from Genesis to Revelation—it is better to read one book consistently and understand its context.
How to read in order to hear God
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Ps. 119:105
Three practical steps:
- A short prayer before reading: "Lord, speak to my heart today."
- Read slowly, stopping where something "stands out"—asking questions: what does this say about God? What does it say about me?
- Write down one thought —even just one sentence. This helps fix what you have heard.
Regularity is more important than volume
Daily reading of even one chapter forms a spiritual rhythm, which is more important than irregular reading of entire books. God speaks daily—and daily reading keeps the heart open to His voice.
"And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God from us... you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe." 1 Thess 2:13
To begin reading the Bible is to begin hearing the One who has always spoken to people and still speaks today. The main thing is to open the book and remain.
