Can an unmarried man and woman sleep in the same room if they have decided to live according to God’s will?

Salvation 2 min read updated 10 May 2026

When a couple who previously lived differently decides to live according to God’s will, that is a genuine step of conversion. But new determination requires new conditions, not just new intentions. Remaining in the same room overnight, even "in separate beds," is putting yourselves where changing the relationship is objectively made harder.

God’s design for intimacy

"Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge." Heb 13:4

Scripture clearly shows that physical intimacy belongs in marriage. This is not just a rule—it is protection for the relationship, for trust, and for the spiritual purity of both people.

It is not enough to have intention—conditions are needed

The apostle Paul gives important counsel:

"Flee sexual immorality." 1 Cor 6:18

"Flee"—not "fight with willpower," but change the situation. Wisdom is not in remaining in a tempting environment and overcoming it every night. Wisdom is removing the situation.

If a couple truly wants to live according to God’s will, a practical step is: to live separately before marriage. This is not a punishment. It is a condition for real change.

What this decision says about the seriousness of intentions

The decision to live separately before marriage is a strong signal:

  • That the new convictions are real, not merely decorative.
  • That they trust and respect one another.
  • That marriage is the true goal, not a postponed choice.

“For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.” 1 Thess 4:7

Practical meaning

If circumstances make separate living difficult, it is worth speaking openly with a pastor or spiritual mentor and finding a solution together. The church is a place where such support is possible.

But the principle remains: the decision to live according to God’s will requires a change of circumstances, not only a change of intentions. God gives strength and support — but He also expects a person to take steps toward Him.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
