What do the Bible and Ellen White say about mushrooms — may they be eaten?

The question about mushrooms sometimes arises among those who seek to live by biblical principles of diet. Mushrooms are neither plants nor animals—they belong to a separate kingdom in biological classification. So it is natural to ask: what do Scripture and the Spirit of Prophecy say about them?

What the Bible says

The Bible does not directly mention mushrooms as food or as a forbidden product. The Levitical laws about clean and unclean foods concern animals—land animals, water creatures, and birds. At the beginning of creation, God gave humanity a plant-based diet:

“Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed… and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed—to you it shall be for food.” Gen 1:29

Mushrooms are not “herbs” or “fruit of a tree” in the biblical sense, but neither are they animals. The Law of Moses does not classify them among forbidden foods.

What Ellen White said

Ellen White does not give a direct and specific prohibition against eating mushrooms. She spoke about certain kinds of mushrooms in the context of their danger to health’—in particular, that they may “injure the system” and aggravate certain conditions. But this warning applies primarily to dangerous or hard-to-digest kinds, not to all mushrooms in general.

White’s general principle regarding food is to choose that which best serves the health of the body and the clarity of the mind. She encouraged simplicity and caution in diet.

A practical principle

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Cor 10:31

  • Mushrooms are not included in the list of “unclean” animals.
  • Some edible mushrooms are nutritious and generally safe.
  • Where there is doubt about safety or quality, it is better to abstain (the principle of caution).
  • The decision is made based on health principles, not on a strict prohibitive rule.

The question of mushrooms is not a matter of sin or righteousness. It is a matter of wisdom and care for the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
