Millions of faithful believers return to the same biblical texts throughout their lives—and each time they find something new. Ellen White did not merely record this experience—she explained it theologically: the inexhaustibility of Scripture is connected with the infinity of God Himself.
The quote and its source
In the book Education, White writes that no human mind can fully exhaust even one truth of Scripture. The essence of the thought is this: the Word of God is not a human text. It reflects the infinite mind of the Creator, and therefore its depth always exceeds the reader’s capacity.
“Scripture is God Himself speaking with us. Here there is not only an outward word, but an encounter with a Person.”
White also in Steps to Christ and Testimonies describes Scripture as an immeasurable treasure, where each new immersion brings more than the previous one.
Why this is so
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Ps. 119:105
A “lamp” gives exactly as much light as is needed for the next step. But the road is endless—and every time you take a step, the lamp once again shines farther ahead. So it is with Scripture: it answers the questions appropriate to the very level at which you are —and reveals more as you grow.
Practical meaning
- Reading the Bible is not a “task that can be completed”—it is a relationship that deepens.
- Humility before the Word is a condition of knowing: whoever thinks he “already knows it all” stops hearing.
- Eternity will be filled with the knowledge of God through His Word—and it will never end.
White invites the reader not to repeat the same thing, but to go deeper. Each reading is not a familiar circle, but a new spiral downward into an inexhaustible source.
