глава Welcome. I'm so delighted you're back with us tonight on this Wednesday evening. I have been in Greece leading a tour in the footsteps of Paul for the last two weeks. Last week's presentation I taped so that you would have it while I was gone. We're going to study Revelation chapter 20 tonight. But let me tell you a little bit about our trip. We traveled up to the area of what is known today as Cavalo, which would be Neopoulos in the Bible, not far from Philippi. Traveled to Philippi. It's quite a moving experience. I've been many times, but each time I go, my heart is touched. We climbed over ancient ruins and uh went into the stadium where Paul would have been in that stadium and then down to the what's called the Beimma or the judgment seat. You remember the Bible tells us that the Apostle Paul was beaten and flagagillated and thrown into prison. Well, the place where that would have happened, we were able to of course locate and uh we looked at the ruins of the prison and just to think that Paul was there with his great courage in God and his faith and confidence in God. And then from there we've traveled down to Thessalon Thessaloni or Thessalonica and recounted the story of Paul preaching for three Sabbaths in the synagogue and then being chased out going to Berea. And I was really excited because I'd been studying about Berea. You know the Bible says these were more noble than those in Thessalonica. Acts 17:1 they received the word with all readiness of mind. I I knew there was a Jewish synagogue and although I had been there many times before, we had never found this old Jewish synagogue. Well, we actually found an old Jewish synagogue that was built in 1850, but according to the records, it was built on the site of the place where Paul preached. And we were able to get into that synagogue, very small synagogue, and relive the story of Paul. went down to Athens and another highlight of the trips were there sitting on Mars Hill overlooking the forum of Rome and talking about how Paul came to that city and you know somebody said about Athens in the days of the first century that there were more idols in the uh city than representing the gods and there were men and were people. And when you sit on Mars Hill and you look up and see the magnificence of the Parthonon and you look out over the Roman ruins and you think Paul came and preached the gospel here, then of course down to Corinth and spent time there. We were there for two weeks. Um preached in our 7th Adventist church in Athens on one of the Sabbaths there, but just had a wonderful, wonderful time. uh sensing the commitment, the dedication of the Apostle Paul. So, I just got off the plane, just came back. You say, "Well, Pastor Mark, you may look a little tired tonight." Well, you'll have to give me mercy on that one, won't you? Because I've been up for the last 24 hours. You know, I don't sleep well on airplanes, but uh I know the Lord's going to help us tonight. So, let's uh have prayer then. Boy, I was so surprised when I got back. I saw all the questions on the cell phone that came in that our staff forwarded to me. So, we got a lot of questions tonight, but we won't be able to get to them all. The ones I don't get to tonight, I will get to next week. But let's pray. Father in heaven, thank you for the faithful Bible students that tune in every Wednesday night to study your word. Thank you that as we study, we can draw closer to Jesus Christ and that through his grace and by his power, we can have our lives transformed and draw closer to you. Father, we long for that day that Jesus will come and we want to be ready for the coming of Christ. And so, help us open our hearts and listen to the voice of God speak to us through the word of God tonight in Christ's name. Amen. Well, you have been very active in sending me questions. Here's a question from South Africa. This is Andre. He talks about Revelation 17 15 16 17 and 18. I won't read the question, but I'll summarize it because it's rather long. And what Andre is saying is look, if the woman represents the fallen church power, namely the papacy, and in Revelation 13, the beast power represents the papacy. How is it then that the beast power attacks the woman? In other words, the papacy attacks the papacy. Doesn't make much sense. Let me try to help you on that one. There are times in Revelation 13. See, there are there are two symbols of the fallen religious power, the medieval church, the beast power, Catholicism. There are two symbols of that. The woman symbolizes it when she is in a a harlot woman. that's left her true lover Jesus. She symbolizes the fallen church, the Roman church. Also in Revelation 13, the beast symbolizes the Roman church. Now when you come to Revelation 17, those symbols are married. So you have the woman riding upon the beast, the woman being the religious aspect of the church, the beast being the political powers both of church, the state powers and all state powers that unite with the woman. So you have one composite symbol in Revelation 13, Revelation 17. Now, it's interesting to notice that it doesn't say that the beast turns upon the woman necessarily. Look what it says. Revelation 17:15. Then he said to me, "The waters where you saw where the harlot sits are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. And the 10 horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot. make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. For God has put it in their hearts to fulfill his purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast until the words of God are fulfilled. So you have this picture of the union of church and state. So in Revelation chapter 17, the political powers and the religious powers unite together as one cohesive power. But then you have these 10 horns which would represent the completeness of nations. And what this is really saying is the church state union of the papacy that the nations of the world ultimately turn upon it. Uh why? Because when the mark of the beast was enforced, the concept behind it was that at a time of great crisis, at a time of international calamity, at a time of natural disasters, economic disasters, at a time of of moral decay, at a time when there is conflict and war and strife and disease everywhere, church and state unite in the under the oposes of false religion and political powers and they do that with the intent the specific intent of bringing world unity and world peace. But that doesn't happen. So the nations of the world as represented in the ten horns the completeness of the nations of the world war against this composite political religious power the papacy and all fallen religions. So there's great conflict here because the church state union didn't deliver what it said it could deliver, namely peace in the midst of conflict and safety, security, and prosperity. So that's the answer to your question, Andre. Uh the next question uh here says uh does Dan have a gate as one of the tribes in Revelation 21:12? Uh you have the 12 tribes listed in Revelation 7 and Dan is not one of them. Why not? Um when the properties were aortioned by um Jacob and the tw and his 12 sons of course became the 12 tribes of Israel. When they were aortioned, Daniel com Dan, not Daniel of the uh re of the book of Daniel, but the tribe of Dan rebelled against the property they were given. They didn't want that property. They came further north, got property, and when they got property, they introduced pagan principles of worship. Dan was unusually critical as well of the people of God. So Dan's tribe was not worthy of being mentioned. And so to get the 12 tribes, you um take Ephraim and Manasseh rather than the tribe of Dan. See? Um, okay. Let's go down to uh next question. Um, are those that pierced Jesus raised also at the first resurrection? We're going to study some about that tonight. It says uh in Revelation 1:7, "And every eye shall see him, and they also which what? Pierced him." They also which pierced him. So when Christ comes the second time, the dead in Christ according to 1 Thessalonians 4:1 16- 17 rise first. The Bible says there'll be a resurrection of the righteous and a resurrection of the damnation. The resurrection of Christ in the resurrection of the righteous. They rise first. But along with them to see Christ coming are those that pierced him. Why does God do that? To enable those that put him to death to be able to see his glory. They mocked him. They put a crown of thorns upon his head. They pierced him with the spear. But now they will see his glory. Um, next question comes. I'm grateful to you, Pastor Finley, for the wonderful ex of Jesus of both the books of Dan and Revelation. May our God um Lord God bless you. I want some clarification on a couple of doubts. Why should the millennium not be 360,000 years? In other words, if you use the dayyear principle, then you would have one prophetic day or one lit literal year. So if you get 360,000, you get a,000 years. One year has 360 biblical days. That would be 360 years times 30 a,000 be 360,000 years. Why not 360,000 years? Why 1,000? The answer to that question is not complicated. When Christ comes, prophetic time as symbolic time stops and everything after the coming of Christ is literal. So the reason the thousand years are literal is they come after the coming of Christ before the coming of Christ. You have the prophetic years after it's it's literal. So I hope that helps you understand that question. We're going to go to our next question. Question number uh four. Who are the 24 elders in the book of Revelation? We've talked about this a number of times. Um I lean toward the fact that the 24 elders are redeemed from the earth. Why? because they're wearing crowns or diadems of glory indicating victory. They're wearing white robes uh which indicates the righteous of Christ. Um angels are never mentioned as elders. So, I lean toward the fact that they are uh the 24 elders are are human beings redeemed from the earth that were resurrected at the time of Christ's resurrection according to the Bible and that ascended to heaven with Christ according to Ephesians 4:8 that they're representative men and women that were uh representative of men that were upon the earth. Now, there are those who believe they're angels. I don't think this is a matter of salvation. Uh so therefore, that's why I say I lean in this direction. But all of us need to keep studying. We need to keep growing. We need to be sure that we're never locked in a position when it is not one that is clear in the Bible and not one that uh mentions our salvation. Um my question is when does the Sabbath day end during the summertime? Because it's my first experience. I need to be certain and observe it. Holy is commanded by God. Brian from Uganda. Brian, I'm so glad that you are so committed to Jesus. He's going to bless you for that. You know, the Bible says, "Sanctify them through thy word. Thy word is truth." Uh Brian, God is going to bless you very very much for being so faithful to him. In the book of Leviticus 23, chapter 23:32, it says, "From even to even shall you celebrate your Sabbath." And in Mark chapter 1, it says, "Eve at even when sun did set." So the Sabbath goes from sundown Friday night to sundown Saturday night. Let's suppose the sun goes down at 7:30 Friday night. Sabbath would begin. Families already gathered together to worship Jesus. But then it would end on sundown on Saturday night at 7:30. So from sundown to sundown. Leviticus 23:32. I've teased some people and I said, "Do you know there's an international telephone number that you can dial any place you are in the world? It'll tell you when the Sabbath is." And people say, "Oh, there is. There is." Oh, yeah. What is it? LEV2332. Lev 2332. They say, "What's that?" Leviticus 23:32. That's your international telephone number found right in the Bible. Leviticus 23:32. Don't try to dial it on your phone, of course. Uh it says uh from even to evening shall you celebrate your Sabbath. Let me just go do a couple more because we need to get to our Bible study tonight. If I don't get to your question tonight, I will get to it next week. Um I apologize. You never have to apologize if you ask a question. All questions are sincere. I didn't really understand what verse 12 means, especially the authority for one hour. That would be verse 12 in Revelation 17. Verse 12 in Revelation 17. The 10 horns which you saw and remember those are the kings or the political powers of the earth are 10 kings who receive no kingdom as yet. But they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. That period of time, one hour is a short period of time. If you use the politic, if you use the prophecy, it's 15 days. But I don't stick to that, right? Then I see it more as a short period of time where the nations of the world unite. They give their power and authority to the beast, namely the papacy and all false religion. So you have this political religious union that forms. The reason it forms is at a time of great crisis and insecurity and conflict and strife. It forms to bring peace and security to the world which it does not bring. And therefore these powers that gave their authority to the beast turn against the beast power then Satan appears to work his signs and wonders. Now there is a question about that. So let's take just a couple more questions. Um, oh, somebody somebody asks, "Where can I get books that give detailed information about the first, second, third century rulers? Where can I get books about? Where can I get books on the Catholic Church encyclopedia? If you are if you have any good library in your town um particularly if you're by any university go into a university library and take your same questions and ask for books about that period and they will have them. If you want a good history of the Christian church I recommend uh Philip Shaft's history of the Christian church. It's pretty heavy reading. They're multiple volumes very thick volumes you know hundreds of pages in each but it does give a good history of the Christian church. Um, you can get also history of Ucibius. Go online as well. Uh, look up Philip Scha's material on the history of the Christian church. Look up. You'll find a lot of these things right online. Um, is it just the papacy of the Catholic system that's the antichrist or does Satan come to earth and physically impersonate Jesus at the time of the end? Uh, Carol from London, England. Um the Bible does give indication that Satan will come to earth. Um it says in 2 Corinthians 11:14, "Know you not that Satan is is transformed himself into an angel of light." Then in Revelation 12, it talks about um woe to the inhabitants of the earth because Satan has come down to you knowing he has a short time. Well, the fullest manifestation of Satan, knowing he has a short time, is his impersonation of Christ. And that must take place before probation closes. Because if it took place after probation closes, there would be little sense in it. So, the devil will appeal to our senses. He'll come and work his signs and wonders. He and where and in those signs and wonders that uh miracles will be wrought, the devil attempt to deceive. That's why it's most important to keep our minds focused on the word of God. Uh John 17:17, sanctify them through thy word. Thy word is truth. And what Jesus says is you shall know the truth. John 8:32, and the truth shall make you free. Uh time is going rapidly, but there's just a couple other very short answers that I wanted to give just to be uh complete this. Um, will we have our own homes and can we move in heaven? Yes, we will have our own homes. Jesus said in uh John 14, I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place, I will come again in my father's house and many mansions. So, so yes, uh, many rooms, the word mansion. And uh Isaiah 65, you'll love reading that from verse 23 on. It says uh they shall build houses and inhabit them. They shall plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them. Yes, we will have our own homes likely a home in the city in the new Jerusalem and a home out in the countryside as well. Um here is just um I want to clarify uh some doubt. It was taught by Adventist pastors that the council of Leadyia was AD 336 when the church transferred the solity from Saturday to Sunday. There were multiple councils. AD 325 was the council of Nika. The council Leodysia actually took place in the 60s in the 360. Now some of these councils you have to understand they started earlier and the councils would go on for years. So you take the council lessa for example uh it formalized in 364 365 AD but that council as many church councils started much much earlier and went on for a number of years. So that's why you might have the alternate dates. When we think of a church council you say okay the church councils took place in such and such a date but you've got a span of dates where they met and took church councils. I do want to be a little bit afraid of uh saying that the church changed the Sabbath in that council because what happened in the council of Leadyia is that Sunday was solemnized but the idea of Sunday worship was introduced much much earlier. Constantine sensitized the Christian church to keeping Sunday with his law in 321 AD on the venerable day of the sun. the council of Nika in 3:25 also uh makes it uh easier to keep Sunday. So it it's a process that takes place. And why did it happen? To disassociate the church from Judaism and uh because the Jewish church had been persecuted. So to disassociate it from Jew from Judaism and also to make it easier for the pagans to come into the church. It was a compromise that took place because the pagans already worshiping you know the sun god. And so to make it easier they in fact Constantine on one side of his coins had uh the sun god and the other was uh his own image. So uh the church was complicit in that. The church was the official organization that made the change as we can read in Gearman's catechism where it says which day is the Sabbath day and uh answer Saturday is the Sabbath day question why do we keep Sunday instead of Saturday because the church changed the day so it is true that the Catholic Church changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday but they formalized what was already taking place in society by Constantine. I think that's as far as we're going to go today or else I'll spend time answering questions. We'll never get to Revelation chapter 20. Um, so we're going to Revelation chapter 20. Can you believe it? We have been going together for now five or six months. It's quite remarkable, isn't it? We'll see how far we get in Revelation 20 tonight. I think we'll do most of it. If I leave some out, I'll pick it up next week when we pick up Revelation 21. So, we have come to the end of Revelation 19. And you remember at the beginning of Revelation 19, you have the four hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. The Lord our God reigns. Why? Because the controversy is coming to an end. And then you come to Revelation 19 11 and onward where Jesus comes symbolically pictured as riding on a white horse. Why? Because when a Roman general conquered the enemy, that Roman general would come back with their trophies, that is to say, with the slaves that they conquered in that land with all the riches, the wealth, the gold, they would come back um riding on a white horse. So Jesus is pictured as triumphing over the principalities and powers of hell symbolically is riding on a white horse. He comes as king of kings. He comes as Lord of lords. And uh when he comes, the wicked are destroyed by the brightness of his coming. Um and notice what it says here. Well, let's go back. Let me just show you that in scripture. Take your Bible and turn to second Thessalonians chapter 1. 2 Thessalonians chapter 1. And you're going to look there at verses 7 to9. And um let's start with verse six. When Christ comes the second time, there are no living people left on earth. And I will show you that in a number of places, but it says in verse 6, since it is righteous, I'm in 2 Thessalonians 1:6. Since it is a righteous thing that with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God and those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power. Verse 10. When he comes in that day to be glorified in the his saints to be admi admired among all those who believe because our testimony among you was believe. So when Christ comes to be admired among those who believe that is when he comes the second time it's not some secret rapture. The Bible says in Revelation 1:7 he comes and every eye will see him. 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 says, "He comes with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, the trumpet of God." So, it's it's not some secret rapture. Psalm 50:3 says, "Our God shall come and he will not keep silence. A fire shall devour before him." And in 2 Thessalonians 1 7-9, it says, "When he comes to be admired in all of his saints, it what does it say?" It says, "The wicked are destroyed by the brightness of his coming." So we go now to Revelation chapter 20. Then I saw another angel coming down from heaven having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, which is the devil and Satan, and bound him a thousand years. Now this is the only place in the Bible that speaks about the thousand years. We call it the millennium. The word millennium is not found in the Bible, but the word millie means a thousand in annium a years. So 1,000 years. Um, now notice it says Satan is bound for that time and he's this is this chain a literal chain that's put around Satan's leg with a ball and chain. What kind of chain is it? And what's this bottomless pit? Is it some subterranean cavern in the center of the earth? some big hole that Satan's put in. The interesting thing is, as you're aware, the New Testament is written in the Greek language. What language, everybody? The Greek language, right? And the Greek expression here is abusa or the abyss. The abyss. How do we know what a Bible word means? How do we know what a Bible term means? We can look at the original language. We can look at the context, but we can also see how that's used in other parts of the Bible. So, how would this idea of the abyss be used? Let's go back to Genesis chapter 1. Now, the New Testament was mostly written all in Greek. The Old Testament mostly in Hebrew, a few passages in Aramaic. When the Greek scholars translated Genesis chapter 1 from Hebrew into Greek so that people could understand it better, original language was Hebrew. What term did they use for Genesis 1 verse 1 and two? In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. So foundation of the Bible is creation, isn't it? That God creates the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void. You see that expression, without form and void. They chose the exact same expression that's in Revelation chapter 20. Uh the abyss, the abusus. So what is this abus? What is this abyss? It's not some subterranean cavern. Christ comes the second time. The righteous dead are resurrected. The righteous living receive immortal bodies. They're caught up to meet Christ in the air. The cities of this earth are broken down. The earth becomes like a desolate wilderness and Satan is confined to this earth with chains of darkness and the earth is without form and void again. Now this is mentioned throughout scripture. Let's look at the book of Jeremiah chapter 4. Jeremiah chapter 4. We're putting the pieces together in the puzzle. Jeremiah 4 verse 23. Jeremiah 4:23 and onward. Do you have it? Do you have your notebook out? Your pad? You taking some notes? That's a good thing. Jeremiah 4:23 and on. I beheld the earth and indeed it was without form and void. Did we read about the earth at creation being without form and void? We did. Is this creation? Not at all. Look, I beheld the earth and indeed it was without form and void. The heavens, they had no light. I beheld the mountains, indeed they trembled. And all the hills moved back and forth. I beheld, indeed, there was no man. Now, was anybody living on earth at this time? No. Why not? And all the birds of the heavens had fled, not creation. I beheld, and indeed the fruitful land was a wilderness, not at creation. And all the cities were broken down at the presence of the Lord by his fierce anger. So, what's this talking about? The second coming of Christ. It's the presence of the Lord. It's very clear on what happens. He says, "The earth was without form and void." Again, in other words, it's a desolate place, a place of darkness, and there's nobody living here. Why not? Jeremiah 25:33. Jeremiah 25 verse 33. And at that day, the slain of the Lord shall be from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth. They shall not be lamented, that's sorrowed over, nor gathered, nor buried. They shall become refues on the ground. Why? Why aren't they lamented or sorrowed over? Why aren't they buried? When Christ comes the second time, the righteous dead are resurrected. The righteous living are transformed, receive glorious immortal bodies along with the righteous dead. They ascend to heaven with Jesus. The wicked who are dead remain in their graves. Where do the wicked who are dead remain? In the graves. The wicked who are living are destroyed with the brightness of Christ coming. And so their bodies are strewn over the earth. And they're not s they're not sorrowed over. They're not lamented over it. They're not buried. Why not? Because all the righteous are in heaven. And by this time, all the wicked are dead. Who is the only one that's left? Satan. Where is Satan bound? on this desolate earth that is now without form and void. What does it mean that he's chained? Well, let's go to the book of Peter, second Peter. What does it mean that Satan is chained during this thousand-year period? you'll take your Bible and turn to second Peter and we'll get a little bit of an idea about this idea of being chained of of uh of Satan being being chained. We're going to look here at the book of Peter and second Peter chapter uh chapter 2. And um notice what it says in Second Peter chapter 2. Um, it talks about, we're going to go down to verses. Let's start with verse four. For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, though these the angels that rebelled against God, but cast them down to hell, that is, you know, the word there for hell. There are three words for hell in the Bible in in the New Testament. Guenna is a place of burning. Hades is like the grave and the word for hell here is a very rare word. It's called tart tarturus in in the Greek language and it means a place of darkness. So you can read this darkness. Uh for if God did not spare the angels that sin but cast them down to darkness, deliver them into chains of darkness to be reserved for judgment. So notice it says they are in chains of darkness. So when in Revelation chapter 20, let's go back to it because it's going to make much more sense to you now. Revelation chap 20. So John says, "I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit." What's the bottomless pit? It is the desolate earth that is without form and without void. And and it's without form and void. It's a desolate dark earth where the city's been broken down where the bodies are strewn over the earth and a great chain of in his hand. What is this chain? It's the chain of circumstances. It's the darkness that engulfs Satan as he wanders through the earth. And he hears echoing in his brains the wages of sin or death. The wages of sin are death. He cast him up in the bottomless pit, shut him up, and set a seal on him so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things, he might be released for a little while. What happens to the people of God during this time? I saw thrones and they that sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Now, who were these people? Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the witness of Jesus. And the souls are the lives of those and for the word of God who had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark in his forehead or in his hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. We're going to pause there. The Bible teaches that there are two resurrections. Jesus taught that. John 5 verse 28 and 29. John 5 verse 28 and 29. There are two major resurrections. John 5:28, "Do not marvel at this, for the hour is coming in which all that are in the graves will hear his voice." How many are going to hear his voice, everybody? How many? All are going to hear his voice. Not only the righteous, not only the wicked. Do not marvel at this. For the hour is coming which all that are in the graves will hear his voice and shall come forth those who have done good to the resurrection of what? life and those that have done evil to the resurrection of condemnation. So, how many resurrections are there? General resurrections. How many major general resurrection? Resurrection of life and what's the other one called? You got it. The resurrection of damnation. So, there are two resurrections. Which one of those takes place first? Which one takes place first? Well, the resurrection of life, right? Because the Bible says the dead in Christ shall rise when? First. Maybe we should look at that in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 verse 16 and 17. 1 Thessalonians 4 16 and 17. [Music] Notice what it says. The Lord himself will descend from heaven. I'm reading verse 16. With a shout, with the voice of the archangel, the trumpet of God. Does that seem like silent? Do you think that's secret? I mean, if it's a shout, could God make it any planer? If it's a shout, it's not silent. The voice of the archangel, the trumpet of God, that's not silent. And the dead in Christ will rise when? First, verse 17. Then we are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus will always be with the Lord. So two resurrections, what are they called again? The resurrection of what? life and the resurrection of what? Damnation. Which one takes place first? The resurrection of life. So when do the rest of the dead live? Those who are not in the resurrection of life. We go back to Revelation chapter 20. Revelation chapter 20. And uh we are looking now at verse four. And I saw thrones and they that sat on them and judgment was committed to them. So, we're going to have to take a look at that shortly, but um it says they live and reign with Christ for a thousand years. And then it pauses and it says the rest of the dead did not live again till the thousand years were what? Finished. So, it's talking about those who live and reign with Christ for a thousand years. Those that were in the first resurrection. Then it pauses because it knows that you're going to be asking, "What about the rest of the dead? What about the resurrection of damnation? So he pauses and he even puts parentheses almost around it and he says, "But the rest of the dead, who are those? Those are the unsaved. Those are the wicked. Those that came up in the resurrection of damnation. The rest of the dead did not live again till the thousand years were finished." So two resurrections. The first resurrection takes place at the beginning of the thousand years. The second resurrection takes place, the resurrection of the wicked at the end of the thousand years. Then after he's described that to us, he says, "Blessed and holy, verse six, is he who has part in the first resurrection over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and reign with him a thousand years." So during the thousand years, the righteous are in heaven reigning with Christ as priests of God. The wicked living have been destroyed by Christ coming and the wicked dead remain in their graves. Why would God have this thousand-year period anyway? Why would God not why doesn't Jesus just come destroy all the wicked, take the righteous to heaven, and be done with it? Why not? You know in Nahm chapter 1 verse9 a little tiny book it says affliction or sin will never rise up a second time and God is dealing with the problem of good and evil in a way in which he'll show the whole universe cherubim and sarapim beings on other planets and earth beings he'll show them the magnificence of his love the greatness of his grace he will show them the beauty of redemption in the terrible wickedness of sin. So during the thousand years, what happens? God is dealing with the great controversy between good and evil in a way that sin will never raise its ugly head again. He's dealing with in a way that we'll know two things. His the immensity and greatness of his love and the terrible nature of sin. So as the whole universe looks at planet earth and sees broken down cities and sees darkness and devastation and bloodshed and death, the whole universe sees that the wages of sin is death. That that had God not stepped in to destroy the cancer of sin, sin is selfdestructive and would destroy itself. that if God let things go on, the entire planet, even the righteous, would have been destroyed. So God intervenes, delivers the righteous. So one of the purposes of the thousand years is so that the whole universe can see the terrible results of sin to fix in our minds the desire never to turn our back on Christ. He guarantees the security of the unic. But there's something else. Have you ever had unanswerable questions in your life? Have things happened to you and you said, "Why did this ever happen during the thousand-year millennial period?" We will see personally the that the way God dealt with us in life was absolutely just, fair, and loving. The whole human race will see that God is so incredibly fair. See, in the pre-advent judgment now, which we call the investigative judgment that Daniel talks about, you know, Daniel says, "I saw a thousands thousands stand before him. 10,000 times 10,000 came before him. The books were open. This the judgment was set. The books are open." So there's a judgment going on in heaven now before Jesus comes. But you and I are not there, are we? So what's that judgment? That's judgment for the whole universe. That's for the angels, the cherubims and servants to see that God is just and fair. And and Jesus steps forth in that judgment and says, "Could I have done anything more to save any human being?" But when we are taken to heaven during that thousand-year period, God opens the books and he says, "What more could I do to save Mary? What more could I do to save John?" And we sing, "Just and true are thy ways, O Lord. Just and true are thy ways. You've done everything you could to save every human being. You couldn't do one more thing. And look, I want to open my heart to you tonight. If you are lost, if you are not saved in God's kingdom, it's not because God didn't do everything he could. It's because of the choices you made in your life. It's because you did not choose to commit to him fully and completely. See, when Christ comes again, there are only two classes. The saved and the lost. During the thousand-year period, there are only two classes. You're either in heaven with Christ or your body is thrown upon the earth to be feed with the buds buzzards. The saved or the lost. What about the end of that millennial period? What happens then? Verse seven. Now when the thousand years are expired, what's that mean? Expired means finished. Satan be released from his prison. go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth. Wait a minute. I thought they were dead. Yes. But verse five says, "The rest of the dead did not live again to the thousand years of what?" Finished. So when the rest of the dead are resurrected, Satan then sees his last chance. And he marshals the legions of the lost. He marshals the armies of all the the the the great generals that have existed down through the ages that have turned if they have turned their backs on Christ. And and he he gets as many as he can together. Why? He's going to try one last chance. But wait a minute, if people were destroyed by the brightness of Christ coming when he came, why would you resurrect them at the end of the thousand years? Because even then, they don't repent. Because the bi because God shows the whole universe and all the resurrected saints, believers, God shows them clearly that even if he would give those that were lost a second chance that their mind is so fixed, their their decisions are so determined, their character is so shaped that they would not accept if God gave them another chance. So that's why he resurrects him at the end of the thousand years. And it says, "And go out to deceive the nations that are in the four corners of the earth." Gog and Magog. What's that mean? Gog and Mog. You know, some people have tried to say it's Russia. It's this that the other thing. It's much simpler than that. Gog is a term used to describe Satan and all of his evil hosts. And Mog is matraog. It's all the evil hosts of Satan. So this is a simply a term to use to describe the rebellious people of God under the influence the rebellious people in earth on earth. They're not the people of God but the rebellious people on earth that are led by Satan to try to destroy uh God's people. They gathered them together to battle whose numbers like the sand of the sea. Verse 9, they went up on the breath of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints in the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. And the devil who deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Now you see that uh expression forever and ever. It is a aon toisonum in the Greek language. It's until the end of the age. Um, they're consumed until the end of the age. When is the end of the age? The holy city comes down and the Bible says God creates a new heaven and a new earth. The earth age ends as the holy city descends. Now, I want you to picture this in your mind. The holy city is beginning to descend. John saw it. He says, "I, John, saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descending out of God, out of heaven. to earth. So the new Jerusalem is descending to earth and as it is descending simultaneously the wicked are resurrected to receive their final reward. Satan sees them. He marshals the legions of the lost. He says this is our last chance. Let's attack the city. Let's attack the city. They race up to the city as it's coming down to attack it. And they surround the city. And the Bible says, what does the Bible say here? Let's look at it. It says in verse 9, they went up on the breath of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints in the beloved city and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. What does the fire do? It devours them. In other words, it consumes them. They they don't burn for trillions and trillions and trillions of years in hell. No. What does forever and ever mean to until the end of the age? The fire consumes them or it burns all the combustible material of sin that's in them. And uh they're consumed. They're burned up. They're devoured. And the earth age ends and there's a new age. Look what the Bible says though just before that. Then I saw a great white throne. Verse 11. And him that sat on it from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God. And the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged according to the their works by the things written in the books. And the sea gave up the dead that were in it. And death and Hades delivered up the dead that were in them, as they were judged, each one according to his works. Then death and hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. God wants you to live. He wants you to live forever. There is a book in the Bible. It's called the book of life. How do we get our names in the book of life? Bible says, "He that has the son has life, and he that has not the son is not life." We receive eternal life by receiving the author of that eternal life, Jesus. Christ left the glories of heaven and he tabernacled in human flesh. He lived the life that you shouldn't and I should have lived. He faced Satan's temptations head on. He faced every temptation that you and I will ever have to face. And he was victorious. And as we come to Jesus, he clothe us with his righteousness. He credits us with his perfect life. He says, "My child, you're imperfect, but I'm perfect. You are sinful, but I am righteous. You're unholy, but I am holy." And Jesus invites us to come to him. Everything we need, we find in Jesus. He is our justification. He is our sanctification. He is our righteousness. He is our wisdom. and we come to this Christ and we say, "Jesus, I'm giving my life to you." Don't wait until you clean up your life to come to Christ. If you do that, you'll never clean up your life. The devil will always keep you tripped up. We come to Jesus just as we are. And we come and open our hearts to him. He says, "If you confess your sins, I'm faithful and just to forgive your sins." We come confessing and he does the forgiving. We don't have to bear the guilt anymore. In Romans 8:1 it says, "There is no condemnation to those that are in Christ Jesus." We come just as we are, but we don't stay as we are. We come confessing. We come receiving his forgiveness. And we come and fall in love with the Savior who saves us, who redeems us, who gives us eternal life. And he works in our lives with his Holy Spirit to change us, to make us new again, to prepare us for his soon return. Is there anything in your life tonight that would keep you from being ready for the coming of Jesus? Is there some secret sin you're cherishing way down in your heart? I invite you now as I bow my head to pray to surrender that thing to Jesus. He wants to save you in his kingdom. He wants to redeem you. You can be saved. You can live in Christ's kingdom forever. Just open your heart to him right now. Father in heaven, we thank you with all of our hearts for Jesus. We thank you for the salvation that is in Christ. We thank you that as we come to you, you will forgive us. You'll take away the condemnation and you'll give us new power and new strength. We thank you that we can live with you for all eternity in Jesus name. Amen. Now, a couple announcements tonight. We just got two more classes. Revelation 21, Revelation 22.
