Numbers 21 reveals this: sin poisons, but God gives salvation to everyone who turns in faith to His appointed means of grace.<\/strong> The chapter shows not only Israel\u2019s fall into complaining, but also God\u2019s mercy leading the people from repentance to life, water, and victory.<\/em><\/p>\n

The story in Numbers 21 takes place near the end of the wilderness journey. The people had already seen God\u2019s care many times, yet once again they allowed difficulties to overshadow their memory of His faithfulness. In this chapter, it is especially important to see this: God takes sin seriously, but His purpose is not the destruction of a person, but healing and restoration.<\/p>\n

Complaining is a loss of trust in God<\/h2>\n

The Israelites spoke against God and Moses, complaining about the journey, the food, and the dangers of the wilderness. On the surface these were words of dissatisfaction, but at their core they were distrust of the One who delivered them from slavery and led them day by day.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the people spoke against God and against Moses: Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, and there is no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread!\u201d Num 21:5<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The lesson for us is simple: complaining is not an innocent way to \u201clet off steam.\u201d It gradually poisons the heart, diminishes God\u2019s gifts, and robs a person of spiritual gratitude. The manna, called \u201cworthless bread,\u201d was actually a daily sign of God\u2019s care. In the same way, we too may stop valuing gifts that have become familiar: life, the church, Scripture, prayer, family, and the opportunity to begin again.<\/p>\n

The poisonous snakes show the true nature of sin<\/h2>\n

When the Lord allowed snakes among the people, the Israelites felt the deadly consequences of their rebellion. Sin is like poison: at first it may seem to be only a word, a thought, or a mood, but in the end it brings death. The people did not justify themselves, but acknowledged their guilt and asked for intercession.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the people came to Moses and said, \u2018We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that He take away the snakes from us.\u2019 So Moses prayed for the people.\u201d Num 21:7<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Repentance begins where a person stops explaining away sin by circumstances and honestly says, \u201cI have sinned.\u201d Moses appears here as the people\u2019s intercessor, pointing to Jesus Christ\u2014our perfect Mediator. Ellen G. White emphasized that the serpent in the wilderness was a symbol of Christ, lifted up for the sinner, and that the look of faith to the Savior brings spiritual life.<\/p>\n

The bronze serpent is a symbol of Christ and salvation by faith<\/h2>\n

God did not simply remove the snakes; He provided a specific way of deliverance. Moses made a bronze serpent and lifted it up on a pole. The one who was bitten could not heal himself by his own efforts, medicines, or merits. He needed to believe God\u2019s word and look.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it happened, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived!\u201d Num 21:9<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus Himself explained the meaning of this event. The lifted-up serpent represented Christ lifted up on the cross. Salvation is not found in an object, a ritual, or human merit, but in Jesus and trust in Him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should have eternal life.\u201d John 3:14\u201315<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is one of the strongest gospel truths in the Old Testament. A person is not saved because he has changed well enough; he is saved by looking in faith to the crucified and risen Christ. Such a look includes acknowledging one\u2019s own helplessness, accepting God\u2019s forgiveness, and desiring to live in obedience.<\/p>\n

After repentance, God gives water and leads forward<\/h2>\n

The chapter does not end at the bronze serpent. God continues to lead His people and gives them water. This is an important insight for those experiencing guilt: after sincere repentance, the Lord does not leave a person in the past. He restores, strengthens, and leads onward.<\/p>\n

\u201cGather the people, and I will give them water.\u201d Num. 21:16<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The people even sing by the well. Where grumbling was recently heard, praise can now be heard. God\u2019s grace not only forgives guilt, but also renews the source of joy in the heart.<\/p>\n

God\u2019s promises are stronger than great obstacles<\/h2>\n

At the end of the chapter, Israel encounters the mighty kings Sihon and Og. By human strength these enemies seemed unbeatable, but God calls them not to fear and grants victory. This is not permission for self-confidence, but an invitation to rely on the Lord in obedience.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the Lord said to Moses, \u2018Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, with all his people and his land.\u2019\u201d Num. 21:34<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Numbers 21 teaches that when sin \u201cstings\u201d the conscience, we should not run from God or try to save ourselves. We need to acknowledge our sin, turn the gaze of faith to Christ, and receive His mercy.
