However, it clearly shows that women took an active part in the church’s mission, and that a married couple could be partners in spreading the gospel. Priscilla, together with her husband Aquila, helped Apollos understand God’s truth more fully.

“He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of the Lord more accurately.” Acts 18:26

The apostle Paul also commends Phoebe as a servant of the church and as a person who supported many. This reminds us that Christian ministry is defined not by family status, but by devotion to Christ and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a servant of the church in Cenchreae… for indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also.” Romans 16:1–2

What exactly Ellen White wrote

Ellen G. White addressed ministers’ wives at a time when many pastors were traveling evangelists. She encouraged a wife who accompanies her husband on his journeys not to view this merely as an opportunity to visit people or receive attention. If household duties do not hinder, she may labor together with him, showing a shared interest in the salvation of souls.

In the book Gospel Workers, White writes that such a wife should help her husband in his efforts, influence people “with meekness and humility, yet with noble self-confidence,” take part in ministry at meetings, by the family altar, and in home conversations. She calls her work a real part of the mission, not a secondary addition to pastoral activity. Gospel Workers (1892), “The Minister’s Wife,” p. 212

It is important that this counsel combines two qualities: gentleness and spiritual maturity. White does not paint the picture of a silent helper deprived of her own initiative. On the contrary, she speaks of a woman who has noble confidence, knows how to speak personally with people, pray with them, encourage them, and give wise Christian counsel.

Ministry must not destroy the family

Ellen White’s phrase “if household duties do not hinder” is significant. She did not require every pastor’s wife to accompany him everywhere or to carry out the same amount of church work. Caring for children, health, the home, and the marriage is not a hindrance to God’s work; this too is a ministry entrusted by God.

The Bible teaches that the gifts in the body of Christ differ. Therefore, a minister’s wife should not copy her husband’s style or conform to others’ expectations. One may be especially gifted in hospitality, another in Bible studies, work with children, music, visiting the sick, mentoring women, or prayer ministry.

“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.” 1 Corinthians 12:4–5

The danger of unrealistic expectations

The church should not treat a pastor’s wife as though she is automatically required to be the leader of every department, a musician, preacher, psychologist, and hostess of all church events. Such pressure does not come from the biblical principle of spiritual gifts. Her ministry should be a voluntary response to God’s calling, not an unpaid position imposed by the congregation.

A pastor must also honor his wife’s gifts, boundaries, and needs. Their unity in Christ does not mean that she loses her own identity. A healthy pastoral family serves most convincingly when mutual respect, prayer, rest, and love are evident in it.

Practical application

A pastor’s wife should pray, “Lord, what gifts have You given me, and where can I serve with joy and faithfulness?” It is helpful for the pastor and the church not to assume her duties, but to ask what role she herself senses as a calling. Let her ministry be not an attempt to meet human expectations, but a sincere expression of love for Christ. Then, according to Ellen White’s principle, the couple will be able to be united in doing good, supporting one another and leading people to the Savior.

[170
post-9624","answers","type-answers","status-publish","hentry","answer_topic-church-2
["GET
