Freedom in Christ does not permit selfish living; it frees a person from the power of sin so that they may voluntarily serve God and others.<\/em><\/p>\n The apostle Paul reminds us that the Christian is not a slave to human rules, fear, or the desire to earn God\u2019s favor by personal works. Christ gives us true freedom. Yet this freedom does not mean: \u201cI have the right to do whatever I want.\u201d Love places an important question before every decision: \u201cWill my choice bring good to another person, or will it become a cause of pain, temptation, or spiritual downfall for them?\u201d<\/p>\n Biblical freedom differs from self-will. Self-will is guided by personal desires and pays no attention to the consequences for others. Christian freedom, by contrast, is shown in the ability to say \u201cno\u201d even to something that may formally be permitted, if it harms one\u2019s neighbor.<\/p>\n \u201cFor you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another!\u201d Galatians 5:13<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Paul does not set freedom against service. On the contrary, he shows that the highest freedom is to serve willingly out of love. A person enslaved by sin is not able to truly love: they seek their own benefit first. But a person set free by Christ can renounce selfishness and choose the good of another.<\/p>\n In the early church, disputes arose about food, customs, and what is permissible for a Christian. Paul acknowledged that not everything is sinful in itself. But he emphasized that knowledge of one\u2019s rights without love can destroy a weaker brother or sister in the faith.<\/p>\n \u201cBut beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak.\u201d 1 Corinthians 8:9<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n This does not mean that we must live under the control of others\u2019 prejudices or give up biblical truth. However, love urges us to be attentive to the conscience, spiritual experience, and weaknesses of others. If my behavior pushes someone back toward sin, undermines their trust in God, or causes unnecessary conflict, love will suggest another way.<\/p>\n Jesus had every right to glory, honor, and the service of people. Yet He came not to be served, but to serve people and to give Himself for their salvation. His life shows that love does not diminish freedom\u2014it fills it with the highest meaning.<\/p>\n \u201cFor even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.\u201d Mark 10:45<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n A Christian is not saved by sacrificial deeds\u2014salvation is God\u2019s gift through faith in Jesus. But a saved person gradually acquires the character of Christ. They no longer ask only, \u201cWhat am I allowed to do?\u201d They ask, \u201cHow can I serve? How can my words, habits, and decisions bring a person closer to the Savior?\u201d<\/p>\n Ellen G. White emphasized that love is the principle of God\u2019s kingdom and is shown not only in feelings, but in selfless service. It is this kind of love that makes faith convincing to the world.<\/p>\n In the church, there may be different views on secondary matters. God calls us not to condemn one another, but to seek what strengthens faith and peace.
