The \u201csea of glass\u201d shows not an impassable wall between God and people, but the majesty, purity, and absolute calm of God\u2019s presence.<\/strong> In the book of Revelation, this image emphasizes the distinction between the Creator and creation, yet at the same time shows that the redeemed can stand before His throne.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sometimes the sea of glass is interpreted as a symbol of the separation of the Creator from creation. There is some truth in this: God is holy, infinite, and does not belong to the created world. But the text itself does not present the sea as a barrier that prevents people from drawing near to the Lord. On the contrary, in a later vision the victors stand by or on the sea of glass and worship God.<\/p>\n

The sea of glass before the throne<\/h2>\n

The apostle John sees the heavenly throne and describes what is before it:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal.\u201d Rev. 4:6<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

An important detail is that the sea is before<\/em> the throne. It does not say that it surrounds God, shuts Him off from creation, or forms an insurmountable boundary. It is part of the majestic picture of heavenly worship. Its appearance is \u201clike crystal\u201d: pure, transparent, calm, and shining.<\/p>\n

In biblical symbolism, the ordinary sea often reminds us of power, the abyss, danger, and chaos. But before God\u2019s throne the sea is not stormy. It is glasslike. This means that no force of chaos can disturb God\u2019s peace or shake His authority. Everything is under the Creator\u2019s control.<\/p>\n

The distinction between the Creator and creation<\/h2>\n

We may speak of the sea of glass as an image of the distinction between God and the created world. The Lord is not part of nature, the energy of the universe, or simply the highest being among other beings. He is the Creator, and everything else exists by His word and will.<\/p>\n

A similar image is seen by the prophet Ezekiel: above the heavenly beings stretches a shining expanse like crystal.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads.\u201d Ezek. 1:22<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Such visions do not diminish God\u2019s nearness, but protect the biblical truth about His holiness. Sinful humanity cannot treat God lightly. His glory is pure, righteous, and incomparable. But God\u2019s holiness does not mean that He is indifferent or distant. He is the One who initiates salvation and calls people to Himself.<\/p>\n

Not a wall for the saved, but a place of victory<\/h2>\n

The strongest argument against the idea that the sea of glass forever separates God from His people is found in another vision in Revelation. There the victors stand by the sea of glass, holding God\u2019s harps and singing the song of deliverance.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire\u2014and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands.\u201d Rev. 15:2<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is not a picture of banishment, but a picture of acceptance. The redeemed do not remain on the other side of the sea; they are in the realm of God\u2019s glory and worship. The \u201cfire\u201d may remind us of judgment, purification, and trial through which God\u2019s people have passed by faith. For evil, God\u2019s holiness is judgment, but for those whom Christ has cleansed, it becomes a source of joy, safety, and life.<\/p>\n

In the Adventist understanding, this is especially important: salvation is not based on human worthiness or achievements. Only the grace of Christ gives the sinner the right to stand before God. He does not remove God\u2019s holiness, but reconciles us to the holy God.<\/p>\n

Why in the New Jerusalem \u201cthe sea was no more\u201d<\/h2>\n

At the end of the book John reports:<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.\u201d Rev. 21:1<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

These words are not necessarily a statement that there will be no water at all on the renewed earth. In the symbolic language of Revelation, the sea is also associated with instability, hostile forces, peoples, turmoil, and separation. In God\u2019s eternal kingdom there will no longer be sin, fear, death, or alienation. Therefore, nothing will remain there that separates God and His children.<\/p>\n

Conclusion and practical application<\/h2>\n

The sea of glass reminds us: God is infinitely higher than creation, yet He has not cut Himself off from those whom He saves. His holiness is not a cold distance; in Christ it becomes hope for the purified person. The victors by the sea of glass prove that the ultimate goal of the gospel is not merely to escape judgment, but to live in God\u2019s presence and worship Him.<\/p>\n

Practically, this urges us to combine reverence with trust.
