And the \u201ctwo olive branches\u201d are, most likely, branches or offshoots of those same trees through which, in the imagery of the vision, the oil flows to the lampstand.<\/em><\/p>\n In older biblical language, the word \u201colive\u201d can mean not only the fruit of the olive tree, but also the tree itself. Therefore, when the text speaks of \u201ctwo olives,\u201d it is not referring to two berries or fruits, but to two olive trees standing beside the lampstand.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd two olive trees by it, one at the right of the bowl, and the other at the left of it.\u201d Zech. 4:3<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n The image is very expressive: in the center stands a golden lampstand, and beside it are two olive trees. The lampstand needs oil in order to burn. The olive tree provides oil. Thus, God is showing Zechariah not merely a botanical scene, but a spiritual principle: God\u2019s light is sustained by God\u2019s source, not by human strength.<\/p>\n Zechariah first asks about the trees themselves\u2014the two olive trees on the right and left sides of the lampstand.<\/p>\n \u201cThen I answered and said to him, \u2018What are these two olive trees\u2014at the right of the lampstand and at its left?\u2019\u201d Zech 4:11<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Then the prophet asks a clarifying question about the two branches through which, in the imagery of the vision, \u201cgold,\u201d that is, pure oil, flows.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd I answered again and said to him, \u2018What are these two olive branches that drip into the receptacles of the two gold pipes, from which the golden oil drains?\u2019\u201d Zech. 4:12<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n So, the \u201ctwo olive trees\u201d are two trees, while the \u201ctwo olive branches\u201d are part of those trees connected with transmitting oil to the lampstand. They do not necessarily mean two separate new persons or two other symbols. It is as though the prophet looks more closely: first he sees the trees, and then he notices the branches through which the lampstand is supplied.<\/p>\n The key to the whole vision is found in God\u2019s words to Zerubbabel. Rebuilding the temple seemed impossible because of the people\u2019s weakness, the opposition of enemies, and limited resources. But God reminds him that His work is accomplished not by human power.<\/p>\n \u201cNot by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,\u2019 says the Lord of hosts.\u201d Zech. 4:6<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n In Adventist understanding, oil in biblical symbolism often points to the work of the Holy Spirit. The lampstand can shine only when it has a constant supply of oil. Likewise, God\u2019s people can bear witness to the world only when they depend on the Spirit of God, and not on their own wisdom, organization, or strength of character.<\/p>\n Ellen White repeatedly emphasized that the form of religion without the Holy Spirit has no power. The church may have structure, knowledge, and correct doctrine, but light for the world appears only where the heart is filled with Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n The angel explains to Zechariah the main meaning of the symbol:<\/p>\n \u201cAnd he said, \u2018These are the two anointed ones, who stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.\u2019\u201d Zech 4:14<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n In the immediate historical context, this fits well with the two servants of God of that time: Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel, the leader of the people from the house of David. One represented priestly ministry, the other royal-administrative leadership in rebuilding the temple. Both were \u201csons of oil,\u201d that is, anointed by God for special service.<\/p>\n At the same time, this image has a broader prophetic echo.
