Zechariah 7 shows that religious form has value only when it is born of obedience, mercy, and sincere conversion to the Lord.<\/em><\/p>\n In the seventh chapter of Zechariah, people come with what seems to be the right question: should they continue fasting as they had done in the years of distress? But the Lord shifts the conversation from ritual to motives. That is why this chapter is especially important for God\u2019s last-day people. One may have much light, know the prophecies, understand the truths about the sanctuary, the Sabbath, the judgment, and the Second Coming of Christ, and yet not allow the truth to change one\u2019s character. Zechariah 7 reminds us: what is decisive is not only what we profess, but also who we become under the influence of God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n At the beginning of the chapter, representatives of the people approach the priests and prophets with a practical religious question. They want to know whether to continue their customary fast. But the Lord answers unexpectedly: when you fasted, were you really fasting for Me?<\/p>\n \u201cSay to all the people of the land and to the priests: When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for these seventy years, was it really for Me that you fasted? And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves?\u201d Zech. 7:5-6<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n God does not reject the idea of fasting itself. In the Bible, fasting can be a blessed means of humility, prayer, and seeking the Lord. But here the danger is revealed: even a spiritual practice can become self-centered. A person may perform religious acts, yet keep self\u2014not God\u2014at the center.<\/p>\n For Seventh-day Adventists, there is an important lesson here. One may speak correctly about the truth, defend biblical doctrines, serve zealously in the church, and yet quietly build one\u2019s religious life around one\u2019s own correctness, habit, or reputation. But the Lord asks: \u201cIs this really for Me?\u201d<\/p>\n Then the Lord reminds them that this message had already been proclaimed through the former prophets. His will was never reduced to outward ritual. God expected from His people righteous relationships with others, honesty, mercy, and purity of intention.<\/p>\n \u201cThus says the Lord of hosts: Execute true justice, show mercy and compassion everyone to his brother. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the stranger or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother.\u201d Zech. 7:9-10<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n This is where the genuineness of spirituality is tested\u2014not only in theological formulations, but in how we treat the weak, the defenseless, and the inconvenient. Biblical truth always bears moral fruit. If truth is received rightly, it makes the heart softer before God and kinder toward people.<\/p>\n This thought is also in harmony with the message of the three angels. God\u2019s remnant does not merely know the correct doctrines\u2014it reflects the character of Christ. Ellen White repeatedly emphasized that God\u2019s final work on earth is connected with the restoration of the image of Jesus in humanity. Outward correctness without inward transformation has never been God\u2019s ideal.<\/p>\n The strongest warning of the chapter is that the past judgments upon Israel happened not because the people were completely irreligious. The problem was their stubborn unwillingness to listen to the Lord.<\/p>\n \u201cBut they refused to listen, shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears so that they could not hear. Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts.\u201d Zech. 7:11-12<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Here the process of spiritual hardening is described. First, a person does not want to listen. Then he becomes accustomed to turning away. Next, the heart hardens so much that even the clear Word of God no longer moves it. This is very serious for the end time, when there will be much religious activity all around, but not everywhere will there be true obedience to the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n The book of Revelation speaks of God\u2019s last-day people this way:<\/p>\n \u201cHere is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus!\u201d Rev. 14:12<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Keeping the commandments of God is not only about outwardly standing on the right side in matters of worship. It means having a heart that does not resist God. Such a heart is ready for the final crisis.<\/p>\n Zechariah 7 is especially relevant for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. God has given His people great light: an understanding of the heavenly sanctuary, the investigative judgment, the Sabbath, the state of the dead, healthful living, and the nearness of the Second Coming. But this chapter warns us against the dangerous illusion that simply belonging to the people of truth already guarantees faithfulness to God.<\/p>\n One may be close to the sanctuary yet far away in heart. One may speak about reform yet have no love. One may defend the truth, yet do it harshly, proudly, and without mercy. Then the truth that should sanctify in fact becomes only an outward form.<\/p>\n Christ also emphasized the inner condition of a person:<\/p>\nThe question about fasting and God\u2019s answer about sincerity<\/h2>\n
