He went up a mountain near the Sea of Galilee, sat down as teachers of that time did, and began not with rebukes, but with blessings. Each sentence begins with the word “blessed” — that is, happy, truly blessed by God. This is not a list of requirements to fulfill in order to earn Heaven’s love, but a portrait of a person in whose heart the kingdom of God is already at work. Jesus is, as it were, showing: here is who is truly happy — and these are often not at all the people whom the world considers successful.

Текст Заповідей блаженства

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:3–12

What Each Beatitude Means

Blessed are the poor in spirit

These are people who have recognized their spiritual poverty—that in themselves they have no worth before God and need His grace. This is the opposite of proud self-confidence. To the one who acknowledges his emptiness, God gives the greatest gift—His Kingdom.

Blessed are those who mourn

This refers first of all to those who grieve over sin—their own and the world’s—and sincerely repent. Such sorrow does not leave a person empty: God promises comfort and consolation that only He can give.

Blessed are the meek

Meekness is not weakness, but strength under God’s control: the ability not to retaliate, not to insist on one’s own way, to trust the Lord instead of taking by force what seems yours. It is to such people that Jesus promises the renewed earth as an inheritance.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness

Righteousness here is desired as intensely as a hungry person desires bread and a thirsty person desires water. It is a longing to be right before God and to live according to His will. Such a person will not be left empty-handed—God will satisfy them.

Blessed are the merciful

A merciful person sees another’s need and responds to it—with forgiveness, compassion, and practical help. Whoever shows mercy to others has already received and will yet receive God’s mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart

Purity of heart is wholehearted devotion to God, when a person has no hidden motives or double-mindedness. To such people Jesus promises the greatest thing possible: they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers

A peacemaker does not merely avoid quarrels—he actively brings reconciliation between people and leads them to peace with God. In this he becomes like the Father Himself, and therefore is called His son.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake

Jesus repeats the last beatitude twice and expands it: faithfulness to Him may cost slander, persecution, and contempt. But this is not a reason for despair; it is a reason for joy—because the prophets were persecuted in the same way, and the reward in heaven is great.

How to Live by the Beatitudes

The Beatitudes are not fulfilled by willpower—they grow in a heart that God changes from within. But in practice, you can begin with them very concretely. Acknowledge before God your need for Him instead of pretending to be spiritually self-sufficient. Allow yourself to truly grieve over sin—and to receive forgiveness, rather than carry guilt any longer. In conflicts, choose meekness instead of pressing and winning at any cost. Look for opportunities to show mercy to someone who “does not deserve” it. Be honest in your motives and bring peace where it is lacking—in the family, the church, and the workplace.

It is good to read these words together with prayer. Many believers combine meditation on the Beatitudes with the Lord’s Prayer, which Jesus gave a little later in the same Sermon on the Mount, and with Psalm 50 “Have mercy on me, O God”, where the heart of the “poor in spirit” and the “mourning” is expressed with particular depth.

The Adventist view

Seventh-day Adventists see in the Beatitudes a portrait of a citizen of God’s Kingdom—the character that the Holy Spirit forms in a person who has turned to God. These are not nine separate virtues for an elite few, but a complete picture of a disciple of Christ, available to everyone who comes to the Savior.

It is important to understand how these words relate to the Law. Jesus plainly said that He came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). The Beatitudes do not cancel The Ten Commandments, but show their depth: the Law says, “Do not murder”—but the Sermon on the Mount reaches all the way to anger and reconciliation in the heart. The Ten Commandments describe what love looks like in practice; the Beatitudes describe the heart from which that love naturally flows. Therefore, obedience to God for Adventists is not a way to earn salvation, but a loving response to grace already given. The reward Jesus speaks of—“the kingdom of heaven” and “the earth as an inheritance”—is connected for Adventists with the real hope of Christ’s Second Coming and the renewed earth (Revelation 21), where the righteous will finally see God face to face.

If you would like to explore a particular beatitude more deeply or understand how it relates to your life, ask our AI assistant below.

[147
post-9361","answers","type-answers","status-publish","hentry","answer_topic-salvation
["GET
