Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident in this\u2014His help! One thing I have asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple. For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will set me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord. Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! My heart says of You, \"Seek His face!\" Your face, Lord, will I seek. Hide not Your face from me; turn not Your servant away in anger. You have been my help; cast me not off, forsake me not, O God of my salvation! Give me not over to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait on the Lord!\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>About the numbering: in the Ohienko translation, which follows the church (Greek, Septuagint) tradition, this is <b>Psalm 27<\/b>; in the Hebrew numbering, adopted in many modern editions, the same text is listed as <b>Psalm 27<\/b>. The difference arises because the Greek tradition combines Psalms 9 and 10 into one, and from that point on the numbering is one less than the Hebrew\u2014but the words of the psalm itself are identical.<\/p>\n<h2>What this psalm is about<\/h2>\n<p>Psalm 26 opens with one of the boldest confessions in the entire Psalter: \u201cThe Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?\u201d There is no bravado here. He shall set me high upon a rock.\u201d Nearness to God is true protection.<\/p>\n<p>The second half of the psalm sounds quieter and more personal\u2014no longer the song of a warrior, but the prayer of a child: \u201cHear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice... do not hide Your face from me.\u201d Here there is room for human pain\u2014\u201cWhen my father and my mother forsake me\u201d\u2014and for unshakable confidence\u2014\u201cthen the Lord will take care of me.\u201d And it all ends with a command to one\u2019s own soul that is worth an entire sermon: \u201cWait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord.\u201d Hope is repeated twice, framing courage\u2014because it is hope that makes the heart strong.<\/p>\n<h2>When to read Psalm 26<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>When fear grips you\u2014because of a threat, bad news, a medical diagnosis, or danger to your loved ones.<\/li>\n<li>In times of war and anxiety\u2014this psalm is written precisely in the language of siege, camp, and battle, and it speaks directly to the heart of a person under fire or in a shelter.<\/li>\n<li>When you feel abandoned\u2014even if \u201cmy father and my mother have forsaken me,\u201d the psalm reminds you: \u201cthe Lord will take me up.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>When you need to make a decision and do not know the way\u2014\u201cTeach me Your way, O Lord, and lead me in a smooth path.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>When faith grows weak and you want to give up\u2014the last verse restores strength: \u201cbe of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to pray this psalm<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Read the psalm slowly out loud once\u2014not analyzing, but simply letting the words enter you.<\/li>\n<li>Pause at the first verse and repeat it as your own confession: \u201cThe Lord is <i>my<\/i> light, <i>my<\/i> salvation.\u201d Name before God the specific fear that is pressing on you today.<\/li>\n<li>When you come to \u201cOne thing I have desired of the Lord,\u201d ask yourself: what does my heart desire most? Ask not only for deliverance from the problem, but for closeness with God Himself.<\/li>\n<li>At the words \u201cHear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice,\u201d speak to Him honestly about everything\u2014pain, hurt, weariness. The psalm allows you to be honest.<\/li>\n<li>End your prayer with the last verse, speaking it to your own heart as a command: \u201cWait on the Lord; be of good courage.\u201d This is not self-suggestion, but a choice of trust.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>The Adventist view<\/h2>\n<p>Seventh-day Adventists read Psalm 26 as a living promise grounded in the very character of God, not in our circumstances. The words \u201cI would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living\u201d point beyond temporary deliverance\u2014to the ultimate hope that Scripture unfolds in the promise of the Second Coming and the new heaven and the new earth (Revelation 21). The \u201clight and salvation\u201d that rescues from enemies today in this psalm will be fully revealed then, when fear will be gone altogether. Just as God promises in Isaiah 41:10, \u201cDo not fear, for I am with you,\u201d Psalm 26 makes that presence a personal experience of prayer.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, this psalm is a good example of how the whole Bible speaks with one voice of hope.
