Most people imagine angels as sweet female figures with white wings and a halo.<\/b> This image was created by artists and pop culture, not the Bible. The real descriptions of angels in Scripture are completely different\u2014powerful, sometimes terrifying, far removed from postcard kitsch. Here is what the Bible actually says about the appearance of angels, their nature, and why almost every encounter with an angel in Scripture begins with the words, \"Do not be afraid!\"<\/p>\nThe first important thing: angels are not people<\/h2>\n
A common idea is: \"when a person dies, he becomes an angel.\" The Bible does not teach this. Angels are a separate category of created beings:<\/p>\n
\"For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment.\" 2 Pet 2:4<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Angels were created by God before humans (Job 38:7 \u2014 \"when all the sons of God shouted for joy\"). They are spiritual beings<\/i>, who have free will, intellect, and their own personality. When a person dies, he does not \"get wings\"\u2014that is a poetic metaphor, not a biblical teaching.<\/p>\n
What angels looked like in the Bible \u2014 specific descriptions<\/h2>\n
The Bible gives several descriptions. None of them looks like a \"sweet female figure.\"<\/p>\n
The Angel of the Lord appearing to Manoah (Samson's father)<\/h3>\n
\"Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, 'A Man of God came to me... And His countenance was like the countenance of the Angel of God, very awesome!'\" Judg 13:6<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
\"Awesome\" is a word far removed from \"cute.\"<\/p>\n
The angel at Jesus' tomb<\/h3>\n
\"And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven... His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.\" Matt 28:2\u20134<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Imperial soldiers with swords\u2014trained, fearless\u2014fell like dead men. That does not look like a \"postcard little angel.\"<\/p>\n
Seraphim seen by Isaiah<\/h3>\n
\"Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.'\" Isa 6:2\u20133<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Six wings. They cover their faces (because even they cannot look directly at God). They cover their feet (a symbol of humility). They continually proclaim God's holiness. And Isaiah, seeing this, cries out: \"Woe is me, for I am... a man of unclean lips!\" (Isa 6:5)<\/p>\n
Cherubim seen by Ezekiel<\/h3>\n
\"As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man; each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, each of the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an eagle.\" Ezek 1:10<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Ezekiel describes four faces on one creature (man, lion, ox, eagle). Four wings. Wheels within wheels. Eyes everywhere. It is a description that breaks ordinary categories\u2014and Ezekiel says: \"I fell on my face.\"<\/p>\n
Lucifer transformed (before the fall)<\/h3>\n
The Bible describes Lucifer before the fall as the \"anointed cherub who covers\" (Ezek 28:14). He was perfect in beauty, like the \"seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty\" (verse 12). His beauty was so great that he became captivated with himself\u2014and this became the cause of his fall.<\/p>\n
Why almost always \"Do not be afraid!\"<\/h2>\n
Notice the pattern. Every encounter with an angel in the Bible begins with the person being afraid<\/b>, and the first thing the angel says is:<\/p>\n

- To Zechariah (Luke 1:13): \"Do not be afraid, Zechariah!\"<\/li>\n
- To Mary (Luke 1:30): \"Do not be afraid, Mary!\"<\/li>\n
- To Joseph (Matt 1:20): \"Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife!\"<\/li>\n
- To the shepherds (Luke 2:10): \"Do not be afraid!\"<\/li>\n
- To the women at the tomb (Matt 28:5): \"Do not be afraid!\"<\/li>\n
- To Daniel (Dan 10:12): \"Do not fear, Daniel!\"<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
This is not accidental. A real encounter with an angel is a powerful experience<\/b>, because in our everyday consciousness we are not used to encountering beings from another dimension. As Lewis wrote, the biblical angel is \"not that sentimental image found on Christmas cards. It is something that makes you fall to your knees.\"<\/p>\n
Do people have guardian angels<\/h2>\n
The Bible hints that they do\u2014especially children:<\/p>\n
\u201cTake heed that you never despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that their angels continually see the face of My Father in heaven.\u201d Matt. 18:10<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
And also: \u201cAre they not all ministering spirits sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?\u201d (Heb. 1:14). Angels have a ministry for believers<\/i>. Does this mean a \u201cpersonal guardian angel\u201d? The Bible does not say so directly. But it does clearly affirm that angels protect God\u2019s people (Ps. 91:11).<\/p>\n
How many angels exist<\/h2>\n
The Bible speaks of an \u201cinnumerable\u201d number:<\/p>\n
\u201cThen I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne\u2026 and their number was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands.\u201d Rev. 5:11<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
This number (billions) is symbolic. The actual number is unknown, but it is vast.<\/p>\n
What angels do<\/h2>\n

- Worship God.<\/b> This is their primary \u201cfunction\u201d (Isa. 6, Rev. 4).<\/li>\n
- Deliver messages.<\/b> The Greek word \u201cangelos<\/i>\u201d literally means \u201cmessenger.\u201d Gabriel was sent to Mary, Daniel, and Zechariah.<\/li>\n
- Protect believers.<\/b> We see this in Psalm 91, in the story of Daniel in the lions\u2019 den, and Peter in prison (Acts 12).<\/li>\n
- Carry out God\u2019s judgment.<\/b> At times\u2014this as well. The ten plagues of Egypt, the destruction of Sodom.<\/li>\n
- Observe human history.<\/b> The Bible suggests that angels are interested in our destiny (1 Pet. 1:12).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
Can we pray to angels<\/h2>\n
