Psalm 90\u2014\"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High\"\u2014is a prayer of trust in a time of danger.<\/b> It is read in war, in illness, in fear. Not because the words have magical power, but because this psalm accurately describes reality: God truly protects those who trust in Him.<\/p>\n

Full text of Psalm 90 (Ohienko)<\/h2>\n

\"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.' Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and armor. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the recompense of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your tent. For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the crocodile you shall trample underfoot. 'Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. A note about numbering.<\/i> In the Ohienko translation this is Psalm 90, while in Khomenko and Turconiak it is Psalm 91. The difference is that the Greek and Latin tradition combine Psalms 9 and 10 into one, so the subsequent numbering is shifted. The text is the same.<\/p>\n

To whom does this prayer belong?<\/h2>\n

The author of the psalm is not explicitly identified. Jewish tradition attributes it to Moses (as with the previous Psalm 89). Thematically, the psalm continues the thought of Psalm 89: human life is short, but God is a secure refuge in every generation<\/i>.<\/p>\n

A distinctive feature of Psalm 90 is that it is written in the form of a dialogue<\/b>. The first part (verses 1\u201313) is spoken by a believer who invites another to trust God. In the last part (verses 14\u201316), God Himself answers<\/b>: \u201cI will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.\u201d<\/p>\n

What God promises in Psalm 90<\/h2>\n

  1. Covering and protection<\/b> \u2014 \u201cHe will cover you with His feathers\u201d (verse 4). The image of a bird covering its young with its wings shows God\u2019s care as intimate, not distant.<\/li>\n
  2. Freedom from paralyzing fear<\/b> \u2014 \u201cYou shall not be afraid of the terror by night\u201d (verse 5). Not \u201cthere will be no danger,\u201d but \u201cfear will not paralyze you.\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. Angelic protection<\/b> \u2014 \u201cHe shall give His angels charge over you\u201d (verse 11). This same verse was quoted by Satan to Jesus during the temptation (Matt. 4:6) \u2014 in response, Jesus did not deny the promise, but simply refused to test it for display.<\/li>\n
  4. Long life and salvation<\/b> \u2014 \u201cI will satisfy him with long life, and show him My salvation\u201d (verse 16). The closing promise points not only to earthly life, but to God\u2019s ultimate salvation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Does this mean that nothing bad will happen to believers<\/h2>\n

    The psalm says: \u201cit shall not come near you!\u201d But the Bible is full of stories where people faithful to God suffered \u2014 Joseph in prison, Daniel in the lions\u2019 den, Stephen stoned. This is not a contradiction.<\/p>\n
