A crowd followed Jesus, and among them were women who mourned and lamented for Him:

“But Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, “Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed!” Then they will begin to say to the mountains, “Fall on us,” and to the hills, “Cover us!” For if they do these things to the green tree, what will be done to the dry?’” Luke 23:28–31

Jesus does not refuse compassion—He redirects it. The women saw only the suffering of that particular day, but He saw the next generation and the tragedy of Jerusalem that would come thirty years later, when the Romans would destroy the city and the temple.

The image of the green and dry tree

In Scripture, a tree often symbolizes a person or a nation. A green tree is alive, fruitful, full of sap; a dry tree is dead, ready for the fire. Jesus applies this image as follows:

The green tree is Christ Himself. He is innocent, without sin, full of life. And yet He was treated unjustly.

The dry tree is the people who rejected the Messiah. If this is what was done to the innocent One, then what awaits those who consciously refused His grace?

The principle is clear: if judgment did not pass by the Innocent One, how will it pass by the guilty? This is not God's cruelty, but the real consequence of a person continuing to live in sin, not accepting the salvation that has already been paid for.

Prophecy about Jerusalem

Jesus’ words were fulfilled literally in the year 70, when the Roman legions destroyed Jerusalem. Josephus describes the horrors of that time—famine, maternal tragedies, the fall of the city. This is exactly what Jesus warned about:

“Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed!” Luke 23:29

This is not gloating—it is the sorrow of the Savior for those who did not receive Him. Earlier He had wept over the city:

“How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!” Matt. 23:37

What this means for you today

This text applies more broadly than the event of the year 70. The principle of God’s judgment remains the same in every age: if the Innocent One suffered, sin will not remain without consequences. But there is also good news—Christ took these consequences upon Himself so that you would not have to bear them.

The question this text asks is very personal: am I a green tree or a dry one? Not by outward religiosity, but by the condition of the heart. Does the Spirit of Christ live in me? Do I bear the fruit of repentance and love? Is my heart ready to meet Him?

“Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance!” Matt. 3:8

The words of Luke 23:31 are not a prophecy about a distant judgment, but a call right now: do not remain a dry tree while the green tree is still available.
