This is especially clear in the words of Jesus, who connected our attitude toward others with our own standing before the Heavenly Father.<\/p>\n<h2>Direct biblical testimony<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFor if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+6:14-15&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt. 6:14\u201315<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Christ does not teach that we <i>earn<\/i> salvation by our own leniency. But He shows: <b>an unforgiving heart testifies to a heart not yet transformed by God\u2019s grace<\/b>. One who has truly realized how much God has forgiven him cannot cling to a small offense against his neighbor.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+11:25&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 11:25<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unforgiveness becomes <i>an obstacle to living prayerful fellowship with God<\/i>. In the parable of the unforgiving servant, Jesus warns even more sharply:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSo My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+18:35&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt. 18:35<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>How unforgiveness violates the Decalogue<\/h2>\n<p>There is no separate phrase \u201cforgive\u201d in the Ten Commandments\u2014but unforgiveness clearly <b>violates the spirit of the whole Law<\/b>. God\u2019s Law is not limited to outward behavior; it reaches motives and inner attitude.<\/p>\n<p><b>The sixth commandment<\/b> (\"You shall not murder,\" Exod. 20:13). Although a person may never physically kill anyone, stubborn anger and hatred are the root of that same spirit. Jesus explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.\" <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+5:22&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt. 5:22<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>The ninth commandment<\/b> (\"You shall not bear false witness\"). When we do not forgive, we tend to <i>exaggerate the guilt<\/i>, repeat another person\u2019s mistake, keep them in the role of the guilty one with no hope of restoration. This is a distorted testimony about a person.<\/p>\n<p><b>The tenth commandment<\/b> (\"You shall not covet\"). An offended heart is often fed by hidden desires for revenge, moral superiority, or self-justification.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, unforgiveness contradicts <b>the entire second table of the Law<\/b>, which Jesus summarized with the words about love for one\u2019s neighbor. The Decalogue reflects God\u2019s character, and God is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.\" <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+34:6&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ex. 34:6<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A heart that stubbornly refuses to forgive comes into conflict <i>not only with individual commandments, but with the very essence of God\u2019s character<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2>Forgiveness and justice are not the same thing<\/h2>\n<p>Biblical forgiveness <b>is not approval of evil<\/b> and does not require the immediate restoration of trust where there is abuse or ongoing harm. Forgiveness means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Refusing revenge.<\/li>\n<li>Entrusting judgment to God.<\/li>\n<li>A willingness <i>not to live in bondage to offense<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\"Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, \u2018Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,\u2019 says the Lord.\" <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+12:19&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom. 12:19<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ellen White wrote that the spirit of unforgiveness is satanic in its nature, whereas the spirit of forgiveness comes from Christ. Whoever does not forgive <i>personally rejects the channel through which God wants to pour out mercy upon them<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2>What to do if it is hard to forgive<\/h2>\n<p>The Bible looks realistically at human pain. Sometimes the wound is deep, and the words \"I forgive\" are not born in a single moment. But forgiveness often <b>begins not with a feeling, but with a decision to obey God<\/b>. You can pray:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"Lord, I do not have the strength to forgive, but give me Your Spirit and Your heart.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Practically:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Stop nurturing the offense\u2014do not feed it by repeating it.<\/li>\n<li>Do not seek revenge, even in your thoughts.<\/li>\n<li>Bless the offender in prayer (Matt. 5:44)\u2014this is the hardest and most effective thing.<\/li>\n<li>Ask God <i>to heal the memory<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p>\"With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible!\" <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+19:26&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt. 19:26<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Today, name before God the specific person against whom you hold an offense\u2014and honestly ask the Lord to begin the work of forgiveness in your heart.
