It is God\u2019s declaration that He will personally enter the struggle for His people, even when the situation looks legally hopeless.<\/b> \u201cThe lawful captive\u201d \u2014 one who was taken into captivity by every legal standard \u2014 <i>can also be set free if God fights for him<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2>A question that reflects despair<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCan the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah+49:24&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isa. 49:24<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This rhetorical question reflects real despair. Babylon is \u201cthe mighty one.\u201d Israel is a captive according to the laws of war. By the logic of that time: <b>no one will deliver, there is no way out<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>But this is exactly where God enters the conversation \u2014 and the answer radically changes the situation.<\/p>\n<h2>God\u2019s promise: \u201cI will contend\u201d<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\"But thus says the Lord: Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the tyrant shall be rescued; for I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children.\" <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah+49:25&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 49:25<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Three promises in one verse:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>The captives will be set free<\/b> \u2014 despite the \"lawful\" situation.<\/li>\n<li><b>The prey of the tyrant taken away<\/b> \u2014 God rises against the one who holds His people.<\/li>\n<li><b>\"I will contend\"<\/b> \u2014 God does not delegate this mission, but takes it upon Himself personally.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The word \"contend\" in the original conveys the idea of legally or militarily defending another's rights. <i>God becomes both advocate and warrior for His people at the same time.<\/i><\/p>\n<h2>The image of spiritual captivity and Christ the Deliverer<\/h2>\n<p>On a broader level, Isaiah 49 is part of the \"Servant Songs\" about the Messiah. Humanity is in spiritual captivity to sin: \"lawful\"\u2014because people themselves chose this path.
