Behind this action was hidden not concern for justice\u2014but <i>offense at losing their share of the glory<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2>What the tribe of Ephraim said<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhy did you go to fight against the Ammonites and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Judges+12:1&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judg. 12:1<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ephraim was one of the largest and most influential tribes of Israel. It was used to being at the center. The same conflict happened after Gideon\u2019s victory over the Midianites (Judg 8:1)\u2014and then Gideon gently calmed them. Jephthah responded differently\u2014and the results proved catastrophic.<\/p>\n<h2>Jephthah\u2019s response and the root of the problem<\/h2>\n<p>Jephthah explained that he had called Ephraim, but they did not respond. When danger came, there was no choice\u2014it was necessary to fight at once. But the Ephraimites refused to accept this explanation. <b>The problem was not in the facts\u2014but in pride<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ephraim was offended that it was not at the center of the victory.<\/li>\n<li>It wanted a share of the glory without the sacrifice of participation.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of humility and forgiveness\u2014threats and aggression.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The tragic outcome<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd there fell of Ephraim forty-two thousand\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Judges+12:6&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judg. 12:6<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>42,000 Ephraimites died\u2014not at the hands of the Ammonites, but by the hands of their brother tribe of Gilead. Pride and offense over not being \u201cinvited\u201d led to fratricide within the people of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus later formulated the principle, the violation of which lay at the heart of this tragedy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+20:26&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt. 20:26<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Practical meaning<\/h2>\n<p>Jephthah\u2019s conflict with Ephraim is a warning about what can destroy any community:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Offense over not being \u201cinvited\u201d<\/b> often hides a desire to be at the center.<\/li>\n<li><b>Pride<\/b> turns potential allies into opponents.<\/li>\n<li><b>Conflict for the sake of status<\/b> destroys more than an external enemy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Jephthah\u2019s victory over the Ammonites could have united the people. Instead, Ephraim\u2019s pride turned victory into tragedy.
