But such a reading contradicts everything Scripture says about God\u2019s character.<\/b> Here Jesus <i>refutes the disciples\u2019 false theological principle<\/i>, rather than explaining a divine decision to blind the man.<\/p>\n<h2>The disciples\u2019 question and their false assumption<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cRabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+9:2&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 9:2<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The disciples\u2019 question reflects a widespread belief: every illness is punishment for a specific sin. If a person suffers, it means that he or his parents must have been guilty of something. Jesus repeatedly refuted this principle.<\/p>\n<h2>What Jesus actually says<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNeither this man nor his parents sinned; but that the works of God should be revealed in him.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+9:3&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 9:3<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus does two things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>He rejects the false explanation<\/b>: \u201cneither this man nor his parents sinned\u201d \u2014 blindness is not a punishment for sin.<\/li>\n<li><b>It redirects the focus<\/b>: not to look for the guilty in the past, but to see what God will do in the present.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The phrase \u201cthat the works of God should be revealed\u201d is not the purpose of the blindness, but the <b>context in which God acts<\/b>. The Greek construction allows the understanding: \u201cbut in this situation the works of God must be revealed.\u201d God did not assign blindness to the man \u2014 but He is glorified by taking a situation of suffering and turning it into a place of healing.<\/p>\n<h2>God is not the cause of suffering<\/h2>\n<p>The apostle James states clearly:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLet no one say when he is tempted, \u2018I am being tempted by God,\u2019 for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James+1:13&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James 1:13<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God does not impose suffering only to remove it later for \u201ceffect.\u201d He meets a person in their real pain and acts for their good.<\/p>\n<h2>Practical meaning<\/h2>\n<p>A proper understanding of John 9:3 frees us from two traps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Not to look for \u201cwhose sin\u201d<\/b> in suffering. Illness, loss, limitation \u2014 are not necessarily God\u2019s punishment.<\/li>\n<li><b>To expect that God is at work<\/b> even in the hardest circumstances \u2014 not because He caused them, but because He is the One who heals and is glorified through weakness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Jesus came not to explain suffering, but to overcome it.
