This requires not only knowledge and organizational ability, but <i>a heart that remains open to God and to people<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2>The first principle: shepherd willingly and sincerely<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cShepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers not by compulsion but willingly, according to God; not for dishonest gain but eagerly.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Peter+5%3A2&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Peter 5:2<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peter points to two dangers that must be avoided: ministry \u201cby compulsion\u201d and ministry \u201cfor profit.\u201d <b>A pastor who clings only to position or income has already ceased to be a shepherd.<\/b> True pastorship is a decision of the heart, renewed daily.<\/p>\n<h2>The second principle: be an example, not only a teacher<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNot as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Peter+5%3A3&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Peter 5:3<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A pastor preaches not only with words, but also by the way he lives. <b>The congregation sees more than it hears.<\/b> Does the pastor have a personal prayer life? Does he maintain respect for people when no one is watching? These things build trust more than the best sermon.<\/p>\n<h2>The third principle: guard your own heart<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\"Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.\" <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Timothy+4%3A16&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Tim 4:16<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul reminds Timothy: <b>a pastor is first of all a person who himself needs grace.<\/b> The impoverishment of a pastor\u2019s spiritual life will sooner or later be reflected in the congregation. Investing in a personal relationship with God is not a luxury, but the foundation of ministry.<\/p>\n<h2>Practical meaning<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Regular time with God apart from sermon preparation\u2014personal prayer, the Word for yourself, not for the parishioners.<\/li>\n<li>Fellowship with other pastors\u2014to share burdens and regain strength.<\/li>\n<li>Remember that the flock belongs to the Lord, not to the shepherd. The Lord Himself bears the burden of responsibility\u2014the pastor is only a servant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Christ\u2014the Good Shepherd\u2014gave His life for the sheep.
