That is why Scripture warns so insistently:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.\" <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Proverbs+16%3A18&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proverbs 16:18<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Spiritual pride \u2014 the most dangerous form<\/h2>\n<p>This is the pride of a person who considers himself more spiritual than others. He condemns those who \u201cdo not understand\u201d or \u201cdo not observe,\u201d and is pleased with himself in his faithfulness. <b>The danger is that outwardly this looks like zeal for God.<\/b> But Christ addressed His sharpest words precisely to such people \u2014 to the Pharisees, who were proud of keeping the law.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTwo men went up to the temple to pray: one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+18%3A10&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 18:10<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Intellectual pride<\/h2>\n<p>The pride of a person who knows more than others. Such a person corrects others, does not listen, and considers other people\u2019s opinions naive. In the church, this may appear as theological snobbery \u2014 the confidence that \u201cI understand Scripture better.\u201d <b>Knowledge without humility is a path to division.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Pride in service<\/h2>\n<p>A person who does much for the church may imperceptibly begin to think that the church owes them something. Or that without them everything will come to a stop. This is a subtle form \u2014 it disguises itself as dedication. <b>But true ministry knows this: the flock belongs to the Lord, and we are only servants.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Pride in suffering<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, even suffering can become a subject of pride \u2014 \u201cI endured more, I know more, I have earned more.\u201d Paul warns against a different spirit:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDo not think of yourselves more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourselves with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given each of you.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+12%3A3&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom 12:3<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Practical meaning<\/h2>\n<p>Recognizing pride in ourselves is difficult. Helpful questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does it hurt me when someone else is praised instead of me?<\/li>\n<li>Is it easy for me to accept a fair correction without becoming defensive?<\/li>\n<li>Do I pray as if God owes me something \u2014 or as a person who deserves nothing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Pride retreats where there is a true encounter with God.
