This is important: the commandments describe God\u2019s character and show what God\u2019s Kingdom is like\u2014where there are no idols, lies, betrayal, or murder.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus summarized the whole law in two commandments: love God and love your neighbor. The law is love in concrete forms.<\/p>\n<h2>The Beatitudes: the character of the people of the Kingdom<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBlessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+5%3A3&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt. 5:3<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Sermon on the Mount reveals not new rules\u2014it describes <b>the fruit of the Spirit in a heart that has encountered God<\/b>. Poverty of spirit, meekness, purity of heart, peacemaking\u2014these are not achievements a person gains by effort. This is the character of a person whom God has changed.<\/p>\n<p>The connection with the commandments is obvious: the one who is poor in spirit does not put himself in God\u2019s place (the first commandment). The meek do not kill. The pure in heart do not commit adultery. <b>The Beatitudes are the Ten Commandments from the inside.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>The plan of salvation: how God unites both<\/h2>\n<p>A person standing before the law sees his or her own inability. The law does not save\u2014it shows the need for a Savior.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFor by the law is the knowledge of sin.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+3%3A20&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom. 3:20<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Christ came not to abolish the law, but to \u201cfulfill\u201d it (Matt. 5:17)\u2014that is, to fill it with its full meaning and make it possible through a new heart. The Holy Spirit writes the law on the heart (Jer. 31:33)\u2014and the person born of the Spirit begins to live by the commandments not by compulsion, but from a renewed nature.<\/p>\n<h2>Practical meaning<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the commandments not as a list of demands, but as a portrait of God and an invitation to become like Him.<\/li>\n<li>Read the Beatitudes not as an ideal for the spiritually strong, but as a promise: God makes such people out of those who come to Him.<\/li>\n<li>Where the law reveals defeat\u2014look not for despair, but for the One who fulfilled the law for us and gives the Spirit so that we may live in a new way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The law and the Beatitudes are two voices of one story: what God requires, He also gives.
