It means \u201cthe one who stands at the head,\u201d \u201cruler,\u201d \u201cfirst.\u201d <b>This is not a concept of inferiority \u2014 it is a concept of supremacy.<\/b> \u201cArchon of the kings of the earth\u201d literally means: the One who stands above all earthly rulers.<\/p>\n<p>In the context of the first century, this sounded like a direct challenge: John was writing when Rome ruled the world. Caesar considered himself a god. And it is precisely then that John declares: above Caesar stands another Ruler \u2014 the crucified and risen Christ.<\/p>\n<h2>The difference between Revelation 1:5 and 19:16<\/h2>\n<p>In Revelation 19:16, at His coming Christ openly bears the title:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+19%3A16&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rev. 19:16<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here we see the open, final manifestation of His kingdom. In the first chapter \u2014 <b>a prophetic declaration for the persecuted church<\/b>: your Lord is already Head over all kings, even if the world does not yet recognize it. The difference between chapters 1 and 19 is the difference between a reality already experienced in heaven and a reality that will yet be revealed on earth.<\/p>\n<h2>Practical meaning<\/h2>\n<p>For John\u2019s readers \u2014 and for us \u2014 these are words of encouragement:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Earthly rulers have limited authority, even if it seems otherwise.<\/li>\n<li>Above every human system of power stands the One who died and rose again.<\/li>\n<li>His reign does not begin at His coming \u2014 it is already real, though not yet revealed in all its fullness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u201cThe ruler of the kings of the earth\u201d is not a weaker title.
