Grades, followers, appearance, achievements—a constant scale that pushes us to ask: "Am I better than others?" But pride is not merely a social phenomenon. Scripture sees in it a spiritual problem: putting yourself in the place where God should be.

That is why Jesus, in the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, shows that the prayer, "I thank You that I am not like other men," is not merely impoliteness. It is separation from God, because a person compares himself with people rather than measuring himself before God.

How does the Bible propose overcoming pride?

Scripture does not propose "working on humility" as a personal skill. Instead, it offers an encounter:

"He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8

"To walk humbly with your God" is not a technique. It is an orientation. A person who truly sees God cannot remain great in their own eyes. Humility is the natural fruit of a real encounter with His majesty.

Practical steps

Pause and ask: "What in me is reacting right now to another person's praise?" — an honest answer will reveal the condition of the heart.

Gratitude: "What do you have that you did not receive?" (1 Cor 4:7). Gratitude destroys the illusion of self-sufficiency.

A prayer of openness: "Lord, show me my heart as You see it" — and be ready to hear.

"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." James 4:6

Pride is not overcome by willpower.
