He really does fast twice a week. He really does give a tithe of everything. But his prayer is not addressed to God\u2014it is addressed to himself and to everyone around him. <b>\u201cI thank You that I am not like this tax collector\u201d<\/b> \u2014the last word in the prayer is not \u201cYou,\u201d but \u201chim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is spiritual pride: comparing yourself with others instead of standing before God. The Pharisee had religion\u2014but he had no encounter with God.<\/p>\n<h2>The tax collector: a prayer that opens the heart<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBut the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner!\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+18%3A13&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 18:13<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The tax collector has nothing to offer.
