He compares the present body to a <em>tent<\/em> \u2014 temporary, and contrasts it with a \u201cbuilding from God\u201d \u2014 the resurrection body. He is not developing a teaching about the soul\u2019s bodiless existence.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Paul says that <em>it is \u201cbetter\u201d for him to remain in the body for the sake of the church<\/em> (Phil 1:24) and that he desires not to be \u201cunclothed\u201d but to be \u201cclothed\u201d with the new reality of the resurrection (2 Cor 5:4). <b>This is not a description of wandering souls, but the longing of the heart for fullness with God.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>What Scripture as a whole says about the state between death and resurrection<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFor the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ecclesiastes+9%3A5&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eccl 9:5<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Scripture describes death as a state of rest and waiting for the resurrection \u2014 not as a conscious experience outside the body.<\/p>\n<h2>Practical meaning<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The main point in 2 Cor 5:9 is not a theory of the intermediate state, but a call to the unchanging direction of the heart.<\/li>\n<li>Whether sick or healthy, young or old \u2014 the goal is one: to be pleasing to God.<\/li>\n<li>The resurrection is the ultimate hope, not a bodiless \u201cheaven.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Paul is not teaching here about \u201cout-of-body experiences.\u201d He is teaching about a heart directed toward God \u2014 in any state, in any circumstance.
