What do Scripture and Ellen White say about it?<\/p>\n<h2>Jephthah\u2019s vow and its context<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf You deliver the Ammonites into my hands, then whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites shall be the Lord\u2019s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.\u201d <cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Judges+11%3A30-31&amp;version=UKR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judges 11:30\u201331<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jephthah\u2019s vow was rash. God did not ask for it and did not require it. <b>Human sacrifices were explicitly forbidden by the law of Moses<\/b> (Lev. 18:21; 20:2\u20135). God condemned this practice as an abomination. Therefore, a literal human sacrifice would contradict everything He revealed about Himself.<\/p>\n<h2>What happened to Jephthah\u2019s daughter \u2014 an alternative understanding<\/h2>\n<p>Jephthah\u2019s daughter asked for two months to \u201cbewail her virginity\u201d (Judges 11:37\u201338). Scholars, including those in the Adventist tradition, point out that the phrase \u201cbewail her virginity\u201d suggests that she never married and had no children. Each year the women of Israel \u201clamented the daughter of Jephthah\u201d \u2014 and this word in Hebrew can also mean \u201cpraise\u201d or \u201cremember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>The most likely understanding is that Jephthah\u2019s daughter was dedicated to service at the tabernacle and remained unmarried for life.<\/b> This explains both her grief (childlessness in Israel was considered a great sorrow) and the reaction of the women who honored her memory.<\/p>\n<h2>A lesson for us<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>God does not encourage rash vows \u2014 He did not require this from Jephthah.<\/li>\n<li>Scripture shows that God always remains the One who does not desire \u201cthe death of the sinner,\u201d and even less the sacrifice of the innocent.<\/li>\n<li>Devotion to God is not about excessive vows, but about daily faithfulness of heart.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The fate of Jephthah\u2019s daughter is not a tragedy of God\u2019s design, but the result of a humanly rash decision. God did not require anyone to be killed.
