Therefore, the words \u201ctake up the cross\u201d sounded shocking: it was a call to absolute devotion, even if it would cost everything.<\/p>\n<h2>Three elements of the statement<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cDeny yourself\u201d means to renounce your own self as the center. Not your personality, but <b>self-sufficiency and the desire to be the lord of your own life<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake up your cross\u201d is an active choice. Not \u201creceive\u201d or \u201caccept\u201d\u2014but \u201ctake up.\u201d <b>It is initiative, not passive acceptance of circumstances.<\/b> \u201cYour own\u201d means that each person has their own cross, corresponding to their calling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollow Me\u201d is direction. The cross is not carried into uncertainty\u2014it is carried behind the One who Himself walked this path first.<\/p>\n<h2>What the \u201ccross\u201d is NOT in this context<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Illness or disability\u2014if you did not choose it for Christ\u2019s sake.<\/li>\n<li>A difficult character in a loved one.<\/li>\n<li>Financial difficulties caused by circumstances, not by a choice of faithfulness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are real burdens\u2014but they are not the \u201ccross\u201d in the meaning of Matthew 16:24.<\/p>\n<h2>Practical meaning<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The cross is not what happens to you. It is what you take up consciously for Christ\u2019s sake.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDaily\u201d is not a one-time decision, but a daily orientation: \u201ctoday I choose God again, and not myself.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Following Christ through the cross is not a tragedy. It is the path to true fullness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The cross of Jesus opened new life through death.
