The account of the pool of Bethesda (John 5:1\u20139) is one of the most recognizable texts in the New Testament.<\/b> But the key verse about the angel stirring the water raises questions among modern students of Scripture \u2014 and it is worth knowing why.<\/p>\n

A textual question<\/h2>\n

John 5:4 \u2014 \u201cFor an angel of the Lord went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made well of whatever disease he had\u201d \u2014 is absent from the earliest and most reliable Greek manuscripts<\/b> (Papyrus 66, Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus).<\/p>\n

Most modern translations either place this verse in a footnote or mark it as a later addition. This is not \u201cremoving the Bible\u201d \u2014 it is honest textual scholarship: the manuscripts differ, and the science of translation takes that difference into account.<\/p>\n

What remains reliable<\/h2>\n

\u201cRise, take up your bed and walk.\u201d John 5:8<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The sick man waited 38 years for the \u201cfirst moment after the stirring\u201d \u2014 and could not make it. Jesus came and healed him with a word. The point of the text does not change<\/b>: He does not need any ritual or \u201csacred time.\u201d He Himself is the source of healing \u2014 and the miracle depends on Him, not on tradition.<\/p>\n

Did people believe in the angel at that time<\/h2>\n

Verse 7 shows that the sick man himself believed in the tradition about the water. People gathered by the pool precisely because of that belief. The evangelist preserved the context, to show that Jesus came exactly there, where people were seeking healing by another way<\/b>. And He offered something better.<\/p>\n
