The Sermon on the Mount begins with nine \u201cbeatitudes,\u201d and each of them overturns expectations: \u201cblessed are the poor in spirit,\u201d \u201cblessed are those who mourn,\u201d \u201cblessed are the meek.\u201d<\/b> The kingdom of God appears upside down by earthly standards.<\/p>\n

What does \u201cblessed\u201d mean<\/h2>\n

The Greek makarios<\/i> \u2014 not simply \u201chappy\u201d in a superficial sense. In the LXX (the Greek Old Testament), this word described the state of a person blessed by God<\/b> \u2014 someone who is in a right relationship with God and therefore has deep inner well-being.<\/p>\n

Poor in spirit (Matt 5:3)<\/h2>\n

\u201cBlessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.\u201d Matt. 5:3<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cPoor in spirit\u201d is not someone who has little spirituality, but someone who knows their spiritual emptiness before God<\/b>. This is a humble person who does not rely on personal merit. To such belongs the Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Structure: lack \u2192 God\u2019s filling<\/h2>\n

Each beatitude has one structure: a person experiences a certain lack or condition\u2014and God responds with fulfillment. Mourning \u2192 will be comforted. Hungering for righteousness \u2192 will be filled. Merciful \u2192 will receive mercy. The Beatitudes are not conditions of a contract, but a description of a relationship of trust: you open yourself\u2014and God enters.<\/b><\/p>\n

Practical meaning<\/h2>\n

  • The Beatitudes are not \u201csteps to attain\u201d the Kingdom, but characteristics of those who already live in relationship with the King.<\/li>\n
  • They show that God\u2019s Kingdom is open to those whom the world considers \u201cfailures\u201d \u2014 the humble, the mourning, the persecuted.<\/li>\n
  • To begin reading the Sermon on the Mount is to encounter not a set of rules, but a Person who describes what a true human heart is like.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The Beatitudes are not a task to be completed. They are a mirror: do you recognize yourself in the person Jesus describes?
