Matthew 5 opens what is called the \u201cMagna Carta of the Kingdom of God\u201d\u2014the Sermon on the Mount.<\/b> The context at the beginning of the chapter already says much about who Jesus is and why His words carry such weight.<\/p>\n

The mountain\u2014a place of revelation<\/h2>\n

\u201cSeeing the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and when He sat down, His disciples came to Him.\u201d Matt. 5:1<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Jewish tradition, the mountain is a place of meeting with God. Moses received the Law on Mount Sinai. On the mountain, Jesus gives a new \u201cTorah of the Mount\u201d<\/b> \u2014not abolishing the Sinai Torah, but deepening it to the level of the heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe sat down\u201d\u2014a sign of a Teacher with authority<\/h2>\n

In Jewish tradition, a rabbi sat when teaching officially. Jesus sat down\u2014this was not rest, but the position of an authoritative Teacher<\/b>. This is where the expression \u201cchair\u201d comes from (from Latin cathedra\u2014seat).<\/p>\n

The opening structure: from the \u201cBeatitudes\u201d to character<\/h2>\n

The sermon does not begin with rules\u2014it begins with beatitudes<\/i> (blessings): a description of the character of those who live in God\u2019s Kingdom. This is essential: Jesus begins with the heart, not with outward behavior.<\/b> All the rules that follow (Matt. 5:17\u201348) are an expression of this heart, not a replacement for it.<\/p>\n

Practical meaning<\/h2>\n

  • The Sermon on the Mount is not a \u201cnew Torah\u201d in the sense of a set of rules to keep in order to \u201cpass.\u201d<\/li>\n
  • It is a portrait of a person whose heart has already been changed by the Kingdom.<\/li>\n
  • To begin reading the Sermon on the Mount means to encounter Jesus the Teacher, whose authority comes not from position, but from who He is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
