Acts 20:7\u201312 tells about the young man Eutychus, who fell asleep during Paul\u2019s long sermon and fell from the third floor. Paul went down, embraced him\u2014and the boy came back to life.<\/b> Behind this simple story are several spiritual lessons that remain relevant.<\/p>\n

The Word of God is worth the sacrifice of our attention<\/h2>\n

Paul preached until midnight. The disciples gathered on Sunday (the first day of the week)\u2014perhaps it was their day off, but they sacrificed sleep for the sake of the Word. The very fact of such a gathering is evidence of priority.<\/b> Eutychus also came\u2014but chose the windowsill, where it was more comfortable, and fell asleep.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.\u201d Acts 20:7<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Indifference is a dangerous place<\/h2>\n

Eutychus\u2019s \u201cwindowsill\u201d was a place between inside and outside. He was present\u2014but not fully. This \u201cin-between\u201d condition is spiritually dangerous. Scripture repeatedly warns against lukewarmness (Rev. 3:16). A comfortable place between \u201calready in the Church\u201d and \u201cstill in the world\u201d is risky.<\/b><\/p>\n

God is the God of second chances<\/h2>\n

Eutychus was \u201ctaken up dead.\u201d But God did not leave him. Paul embraced him\u2014and he came back to life. This is an image: God is merciful to those who have \u201cfallen,\u201d spiritually or literally.<\/b> He does not turn away. He comes near and says, \u201cDo not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him\u201d (Acts 20:10).<\/p>\n

Practical meaning<\/h2>\n

  • Where are you sitting in worship\u2014physically and spiritually? Inside or on the windowsill?<\/li>\n
  • If you have \u201cfallen,\u201d God comes to you as well. Eutychus returned alive. You can too.<\/li>\n
  • The value of living fellowship and the living Word is irreplaceable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Eutychus fell asleep\u2014but God did not.
