Zechariah ministered in Jerusalem around 520\u2013518 BC\u2014after part of the Israelites had returned from Babylonian captivity under the leadership of Zerubbabel.<\/b> Together with the prophet Haggai, he urged the people to rebuild the Temple and not lose hope.<\/p>\n

Context of ministry<\/h2>\n

The returned people faced reality: ruined Jerusalem, opposition from neighbors, and the loss of their original enthusiasm. Construction of the Temple had stalled. At this moment, Zechariah received a series of 8 night visions<\/b> (Zech. 1\u20136)\u2014images full of symbolism and encouragement for the people.<\/p>\n

Zechariah and messianic prophecy<\/h2>\n

The book of Zechariah is one of the richest in messianic prophecies among the \u201cminor\u201d prophets:<\/p>\n

\u201cRejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey.\u201d Zech. 9:9<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This verse was fulfilled literally at Jesus\u2019 entry into Jerusalem (Matt. 21:5). Zech. 12:10 (\u201cthey will look on Me whom they pierced\u201d) is quoted at the Crucifixion (John 19:37).<\/p>\n

What Ellen White writes<\/h2>\n

In Prophets and Kings, White devotes separate chapters to Zechariah and Haggai. She emphasizes: their ministry was decisive for the spiritual restoration of post-exilic Israel.<\/b> The people needed not only a stone Temple, but the restoration of their relationship with God\u2014and Zechariah\u2019s prophecy pointed to the One who would build the true \u201cliving temple.\u201d<\/p>\n
