\u201cIf the condition for eternal life is perfect obedience, how can a sinful person be saved?\u201d\u2014this question stands at the center of gospel theology.<\/b> And the answer is not that \u201cGod lowers the standard,\u201d but that He gave the One who fulfilled that standard for us.<\/p>\n

The Law requires perfection<\/h2>\n

\u201cFor whoever shall keep the whole Law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.\u201d James 2:10<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

James and Paul confirm: the Law does not accept \u201cpartial obedience.\u201d The standard is perfect.<\/b> This is not God\u2019s cruelty\u2014it is a reflection of His holy character, which cannot be matched \u201cpartially.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Christ fulfilled the Law for us<\/h2>\n

\u201cFor He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.\u201d 2 Cor 5:21<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is the heart of the Gospel: Christ lived perfectly (fulfilled the Law), died as a substitute (took guilt upon Himself)\u2014and His righteousness is credited to the believer through faith<\/b>. Not because the believer has \u201cearned\u201d it, but because God gives it through Christ.<\/p>\n

Ellen White: not our righteousness, but His<\/h2>\n

In Steps to Christ, White emphasizes that when a person comes to God in faith\u2014God looks at him through the righteousness of Christ. \u201cHe accepts him as though he had never sinned\u201d<\/b> \u2014this is not ignoring sin, but the gift of another\u2019s righteousness.<\/p>\n

Practical meaning<\/h2>\n

  • Perfect obedience as a condition of salvation is not a goal to be achieved, but a gift to be received in Christ.<\/li>\n
  • The believer\u2019s efforts are a response to received grace, not a condition for obtaining it.<\/li>\n
  • To \u201ckeep the Law\u201d after salvation is an expression of love, not an \u201cadditional payment\u201d for entrance into the Kingdom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    God did not lower the bar. He came down Himself\u2014and fulfilled everything necessary in Jesus Christ.
