What do the Bible and Ellen White say about the renewal of the mind and the control of thoughts?

Spiritual life in Scripture is not only a change in behavior. An even deeper level is the renewal of the mind itself, the place where decisions, convictions, and character are formed.

Key text: Rom. 12:2

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” Rom 12:2

The Greek word here is metamorphoō (transformation) and anakainōsis (renewal). Transformation comes not through outward effort, but through inward renewal — these are fundamentally different processes.

What Ellen White said about the mind

White emphasized in The Ministry of Healing and Steps to Christ: thoughts are the forerunners of actions. She taught developing the habit of “redirecting” a thought: when a negative thought appears, do not fight it by willpower, but replace it with a thought of Christ, His character, His promises.

A practical mechanism

“Whatever things are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, of good report… meditate on these things.” Phil. 4:8

Phil. 4:8 is not merely a list of virtues. It is a cognitive practice: consciously directing the mind toward certain objects of meditation. Modern psychology confirms that what we focus our attention on shapes our character.

Practical meaning

  • The renewing of the mind is not a one-time event, but a daily process.
  • Reading Scripture, meditating on it, and prayer are the means by which the Spirit “reformats” the mind.
  • White: “Guard your thoughts, for they become words; words become actions; actions become character.”

A renewed mind is not the result of discipline. It is the fruit of abiding continually in Christ’s presence. He changes what we think—and then what we are changes as well.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
