Why is body temperature 35.5 °C, and what could be the causes?

Health 5 min read

A body temperature of 35.5 °C is most often not a disease in itself, but a signal that the body is experiencing fatigue, cooling, or some internal imbalance. In many cases this is temporary, but if a low temperature recurs, is accompanied by weakness, or comes with other symptoms, it is worth paying close attention to your health and consulting a doctor if needed.

The human body does not always keep the same number on the thermometer. Temperature can vary depending on the time of day, nutrition, physical exhaustion, age, and even the method of measurement. Therefore, a reading of 35.5 °C does not always mean danger. However, it deserves attention, especially if it is not an isolated case. The Bible reminds us that a person is a whole being, and caring for the body is also part of responsible living.

“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” 1 Cor. 6:19

The simplest and most common causes

First of all, it is worth ruling out everyday and temporary causes. Sometimes a temperature of 35.5 °C appears because of inaccurate measurement: a cold room, a poor-quality thermometer, measurement immediately after coming in from outside, or after sleep. In some people, a normal temperature is naturally a little lower than the usual 36.6 °C.

Another cause may be overwork, lack of sleep, prolonged stress, or insufficient nutrition. If a person has not eaten for a long time, is on a strict diet, or is weakened after an illness, the body may temporarily reduce heat production. Mild hypothermia also often gives such a reading.

In the biblical understanding, rest and a moderate lifestyle are of great importance. The principle of balance, work, and recovery is especially close to the Adventist understanding of health.

“And He said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath’” Mark 2:27

This text reminds us that God gave humanity a rhythm of life in which there is room for rest, not only for exhaustion.

Possible medical causes of low temperature

If a temperature of 35.5 °C occurs often or is accompanied by other complaints, medical causes should be considered. One common cause is hypothyroidism—a reduced function of the thyroid gland. It is characterized by feeling cold, sluggishness, drowsiness, dry skin, swelling, and constipation.

Another common cause is anemia, especially if there is weakness, paleness, dizziness, or shortness of breath on exertion. Low blood glucose can also present with feeling cold, trembling, sweating, hunger, and confusion.

Sometimes the problem is related to low blood pressure, general exhaustion, nutritional disorders, or, more rarely, adrenal gland function. In older people, thermoregulation is often weaker, so temperature may be lower without an acute infection. It is also important to remember that some medications, sedatives, or alcohol can lower body temperature.

From a Christian point of view, wisdom lies not in ignoring symptoms, but in prudence. God expects from a person not carelessness, but attentiveness to the gift of life.

“A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished” Prov. 22:3

When to seek help immediately

There are situations when a low temperature no longer appears harmless. Immediate medical attention is needed if 35.5 °C is accompanied by severe drowsiness, slowed responses, confusion, shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness, bluish discoloration, or very cold skin. A further drop in temperature—below 35.0 °C—is especially alarming.

Such conditions may indicate significant hypothermia, a severe metabolic disorder, hypoglycemia, a serious infection, or another urgent problem. In such cases, it is not enough to rely on home advice.

The Bible does not deny practical help and care. On the contrary, the example of the Good Samaritan shows that true love is expressed in concrete action when a person is suffering.

“So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him” Luke 10:34

What can be done now

If you feel relatively okay, it is worth first rechecking your temperature after 20–30 minutes in a warm room and while at rest. Warm yourself well, drink a warm beverage, and eat if there has been a long gap without food. It is also helpful to check your blood pressure and, if possible, your blood glucose level.

Pay attention to accompanying symptoms: chills, cough, pain, vomiting, diarrhea, paleness, swelling, loss of appetite, and weight loss. If a temperature of 35.5 °C occurs repeatedly over days or weeks, it is advisable to schedule a visit with a doctor. In such cases, a complete blood count, evaluation of iron or ferritin, TSH and free T4, glucose testing, blood pressure measurement, and a general examination are often appropriate.

The Adventist approach to health emphasizes simple but effective things: adequate sleep, water, fresh air, balanced nutrition, moderate physical activity, avoidance of harmful substances, and trust in God. Ellen White repeatedly wrote that much suffering is worsened by neglect of the basic laws of health. At the same time, she called for combining faith with разумний care for the body.

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” 3 John 1:2

Conclusion and practical application

A temperature of 35.5 °C may be a variation of an individual norm or the result of fatigue, undernourishment, hypothermia, or recovery after illness. But sometimes it points to hypothyroidism, anemia, low blood sugar, exhaustion, or other conditions that require attention. Not only the number itself is important, but also your overall well-being and whether the problem recurs.

In practical terms, this means: check your temperature again under proper conditions, warm yourself, eat, rest, and assess other symptoms. If there is a sharp worsening, seek emergency medical help. But if the low temperature keeps recurring, do not postpone a routine visit to the doctor. Caring for your health is not a sign of fear, but wise stewardship of God’s gift of life.

The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to convey the message of God's great love for every person, leading them to accept Jesus as their personal Savior, which in turn motivates every believer to make changes in their own lives and serve God and their neighbors.
